Is the diet the same?
I was just wondering if the diet was the same for the Lap Band patients as it is for the patients that get the gastric sleeve done.
My guess would be a little of the same, but band patients are steared away from pasta, rice, bread, etc because it can swell in the pouch. The band patients would also have to chew a lot more times because of the fear something getting caught in the stoma.
Obviously with both you want to concentrate on proteins first.
Any other thoughts on this?

For the most part food requirements are the same. However toloration is very different. Pretend you are a roux en y gastric bypass patient. Believe you will dump, even tho you won't. Focus on protein first and with the carbs, when it is time for them, whole grain and complex carbs are the tickey...in moderation.
All wls procedures have to use caution not to get foods stuck in the stoma. We all need to chew thoroughly and take very small bites to begin with.
Each procedure has things it can tolorate better than other prcedures can, but in the end, we must all follow a very healthy diet, take small bites, chew well, etc.
The best favor any of us can do for ourselves, is to forever believe we will dump from the wrong foods, even if we are banded anbd don't "dump". You help yourself by avoiding getting back into those foods that helped get you to where you needed wls in the first place. Does this help or even make any sense at all to you?
It is after 1 am, had school today and am SICK, so not sure how well my message came accross..lol

Thanks, I think it did.
Our surgeons office is starting a sponsoring/mentoring program.
I had Lap Band in July and I am sponsoring a sleeve patient.
It's mainly for support, but if she's got any other questions about her sleeve I won't be able to answer those like I would if she would have had lap band.
I don't want her to disappointed, and I don't want to feel like I'm not doing any good either.

Jeannine, I think the mentoring idea is great. I would anticipate that the diets would be similar. Neither procedure alters the intestine, just adjusts the pouch. Best of luck to you, bless you for your participation in the project. Hugs
