Protein drinks: which to try?

I'm 12 days pre-op, and had my required class last night where they explained both what to expect the day of surgery, and also the post-op nutrition requirements.  I start on clear liquids for 1 week, plus 3 protein supplement drinks.  Since I need them the day I get home from the hospital, I'd like to order them now (or know where locally to buy, which I can do next week), so I don't end up paying expedited shipping.

I was given a list of options, and also told that what I need to look for is "Whey Protein Isolate" or "Soy Protein Isolate" as the FIRST ingredient, at least 20g protein per serving, around 100 cal per serving, and low fat/low sugar.  The brands they said we can definitely use are:
-Isopure Sport Protein Drink (powder or premixed)
-Unjury (www.unjury.com)
-Smart Forme (www.smartforme.com)
-Pro Energy (www.energyfirst.com/Whey-Protein-Powder)
-GNC Pro Performance Whey Isolate
-Spring Valley
-other alternatives, after discussing/pre-approval by dietician

I can mix it with water, Crystal Light, 1% milk (after the first week), and add sugar free syrup or sweetener.  I can NOT add juice, yogurt, ice cream, or fruit.

I have no idea what to buy!  I know I should probably get some sample packs, or at least not too much of one kind, to make sure I like it.  I don't want to spend huge amounts of money or time figuring out what is best, nor do I need the elaborate recipes that some people post on here (I assume because they're on protein supplements long-term?).  I will wean off the supplements once I'm able to eat my 60g protein comfortably and consistently, beginning as soon as week 3.

Can anyone suggest which might be a good first one or two to try, that is both cost-effective and tastes good?  I've been on HMR shakes for 9 days already, which I don't mind, but I'd be happy to get something other than chocolate, vanilla, or chicken soup for post-op LOL!

Thanks,

isopure (any flavor) tends to taste the best to me and mixes up fairly easily.  i tried unjury but didn't feel it was worth the extra expense.

i tend to get the vanilla or even unflavored because it's easy to customize the flavor, and then sometimes use sugar-free syrups to change it up.  someone else i know gets the isopure fruit flavors and loves them, i can't stand them.

i actually now buy from a company called trueprotein.com, their vanilla whey isolate tastes about the same as isopure but is much cheaper, and you can select the type of sweetener you want to use.  Just be aware with any of these companies, but especially a cheaper more internet-based one, you run a risk of getting less quality control on their product (e.g. it may not contain what it says it does).

i know my tastes changed drastically after surgery.  so i advise against stocking up on protein mixes.  what i did, which i think worked well, was get a bunch of samples from unjury and several other companies, and then tried them in various ways after surgery.

what i liked before surgery i hated afterward.  for instance, all my life i've mixed protein in milk because it tasted too thin mixed in water.  now i HAVE to mix it in water or it tastes way too rich and thick.  i have a very hard time drinking milk period without feeling sick.

Many of the manufacturers will sell you sample packs for around $2 per pack or under.  It's a little expensive but it gave me some peace of mind in the long run.  I think i bought 10 or 15 flavors from different companies.

if unprocessed is your thing, there is a product marketed from DFH called "Whey Cool" which is not an isolate but supposedly replicates the benefits of raw milk without the risk.  and, if you end up with any intolerance of whey, there are some excellent egg and soy proteins out there, but you can deal with that with your nutritionist if the time comes.

I like unjury. I order it at unjury.com. Only I am not sure you will get it in time now, especially with holiday shipping going on right now. I would suggest you go to a health food store and see what they offer. The advice they gave on what to look for in protein is RIGHT ON TARGET with what is best for us. I personally do not like the fruity flavored bullets, they are not appealing to me, I can't stand them to be honest.
I like to mix vanilla protein with orange crystal light. It kinda reminds you of an orange creamsicle. I also put ice in it, as I like them nice and cold.. i like all of my protein drinks very cold. Some cannot tolorate real cold liquids after surgery for a while tho. It varies for everyone.

Most health food stores carry a mixed berry protein powder that meets the guidelines you were given, problem is I cannot for the life of me recall the brand, but it is the only berry one I have seen, so shouldn't be too hard to locate if they have it near you.

Hope this helps some. You may also want to look back through old posts and topics as this has been asked and addressed many times in the past and you may find suggestions you won't see otherwise.

Best of luck!
Hugs!
