Five Days Post Op
Good Day All,
I had surgery last Wednesday (11/17) and am slowly getting into the groove of my new life. I haven't been overly hungry, but am growing tired of chicken broth.
What are some of the things that others have eaten while adjusting? I am also drinking about three protein shakes a day. I know this may be it for now, but I'm just curious.
Thanks,
Diane

Hey there Diane! First of all...welcome to the losers bench! Congratulations!
You should be able to have sugar free jello, SF popsicles, other soup broths (just remove the solids). I know this phase is tough and boring, but soon you will be through it and on to more interesting selections.
You may try making some homemade soups and straining out the solids (freeze them for use later whe you can have puree), and enjoy a variety of broths this way. Just be sure to keep them lower in fat.
I hope this helps some. Best of luck.

Hi, welcome back and to the loosers side..
I am 3 weeks post op. I wasnt allowed shakes til 2 weeks check up.. was clear liquids.. for me.. .. but I sipped my days on broth, sobe life water 0 calories, gatorade, apple juice- must have for me at night as my sugar was not regulated and dropped... but this was diluted. I also sipped home made broths from soups my husband made.. tasted so much better.. I had jello, and water with flavor packets too. pretty much everything on my Drs list. Just rotate, so not to get bored of one thing too much.. but no matter how boring or exhausted of the liquids.. keep in mind it wont be much longer til you can have puree and soft.. which my dr advanced me to both.. I was in heaven with cottage cheese and pudding..lol..
Hope this helps..and good luck!

Hi Diane, welcome to "the other side"! LOL Personally, I was in the hospital for 6 days with nothing to eat or drink (I guess they were saving!) 2 weeks of liquids followed, 1 week of mushies and then very slowly I was allowed to experiment with food. I didn't start protein drinks until week 4 -doctor's orders. Experiment with various liquids, it will only be a bad memory soon.

Some people might find this disgusting but the one thing that got me through the soft liquids part of the diet was packets of powdered gravy mix. They were just a little heavier than broth and gave me a little variety. My favorite was white country sausage gravy. Low in fat but has some protein.

Talk about different rules for different doctors .. the night after i had the surgery my 1st meal consisted of sf pudding vanilla and crystal lite .. i could only eat 1/2 of the pudding and i waited the appropriate 30 mins after the pudding before trying the crystal lite ..
once they tested the surgery with the blue liquid they started me on the pudding that night..
i was sent home on the full liquid diet whi*****luded fat free puddings, cream soups strained, and three shakes a day .. the only shakes that i could handle were the boost glucose control kind .. the powders were discusting and the other ones just had too much .. they had 11 oz and my tummy couldn't handle that much. At my 1st check up 10 days post op they increased me to the pureed diet and two days before thanks giving they increased me to the soft .. told me i didn't have to put everything in the blender .. so i just chew things a long long time now.

Thanks everyone for your input! This stage is really tough!! As a foodie, I enjoy the texture and flavor of food, so the limited diet is really challenging and uninspiring. I saw my Nutritionist last week and she told me I could puree bean based soups -- lentil, pea, etc. and also drink skim plus milk and eat SF/FF pudding. What's difficult for me is that I never ate jello to begin with -- reminds too much of kool-aid which is so artificial and I have never been a fan of pudding.
I am trying the bean soups, but I was told to do this in moderation because they are also considered carbs. So, I drink the shakes and have the homemade soups. I bought a cookbook which is actually really good -- Eating Well After Weight Loss Surgery. It provides a number of recipes for the various stages after surgery and breaks down serving suggestions for each surgery type and stage. It offers me some flavor variety for now.
My biggest challenge is making myself eat something. I kind of go into mental deprivation -- if I can't eat what I want, then why eat at all? Why waste the calories and eat just to be eating? I know that attitude is bad and a set-up for a binge or a splurge so that's why I'm trying to push past it.
Thanks for the suggestions and for listening to my mini-vent.
