OT: Depo injection for BC (ladies eyes ONLY)

How ironic.  This time last year we were seeing the fertilogist/enocrinologist to try to conceive and just the other day I went to him to get birth control.  He looked a little perplexed when I asked for birth control.  Then I explained that I was having gastric bypass and did not want an unplanned pregnancy.  After all people have been known to ovulate more regularly after dropping a significant amount of weight.

I wanted the merena (IUD) but he thinks that it would be difficult to place.  He always has a difficult time finding my uterus anyways.  How embarrassing! Anyways.  I am not that good at remembering to take pills.  Have always had trouble with taking birth control pills.  Even when I was just taking them for my PCOS, I stopped taking them all together due to having more issues with my period.  Have tried the nuva ring before, but I could never get it placed to where it felt comfortable.  I always felt like it was gonna fall out.  So I decided on the DEPO shot for a little bit.   Once I am down 50 or more pounds, I will revisit the merena idea.

Any personal experiences with the depo injection since weight loss?  Is it as effective as the weight comes off?  Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanx

I have no knowledge of anyone who has taken depo post-op. However I can attest to the fact that unexpected pregnancy can occur after significant loss as it hapened with my daughter... AND of course she was thrilled, as she was so sure she'd never be able to have a baby. Sorry I don't have better info for you on this.

I've been on Depo since 2007.  I can unfortunately admit that I have not kept up with appointments faithfully.  I have been  a week or up to a month late with the injection.  If you are late, they give you a pregnancy test before giving you the next shot.  Once you have been taking Depo, it takes up to a year to get pregnant again when you start trying again.  Depo does supposedly make you gain a little weight, but nothing significant at the high weights we are at pre-op.  I highly recommend Depo though I have to admit that at some point I'm going back to pills because I've been taking Depo too long.  If you read the warning labels you probably shouldn't be taking it more than 2-3 years.

I have to defer to your gyno. Just do what is needed to prevent unplanned pregnancy until your weight loss in complete and MD approves. Keep us up to date on your news on the shot.
