Sagging Skin

Hello all -

I am new to the group.  I am having RNY surgery on 3rd of November.  I wanted to find out if anyone has tried to be proactive about sagging skin before it got too bad.   I know there are special garments that lipo patients wear after surgery to assist with skin tightening.  Do you think that would help if worn daily?

Any thoughts or comments would be great!

Thanks!

The amount of loose skin varies from person to person, the amount and lenght of time the skin has been stretched, your age and numerous other variables. I wear support panties just to control the abdominal apron sag. There is a possibility of insurance paying for or partially paying for reconstructive surgery, depends on policy and medical need. If you develop any rashes, open skin, etc due to skin rubbing together, they may agree. Call and get any wounds documented by your pcp. I would talk with your surgical team about the benefit for yourself of wearing any other garment. It may help, let us know what you learn. Hugs

My girlfriend who had the surgery said that exercise helped with some of the sagging skin.  Keep in mind though she is in late 30s.  My skin sags horribly but I have not been faithful with exercising.  I've lost 135 pounds (34 prior to surgery) since my RNY on 1/20/10.  I agree with Kathy's statements.  It depends on the elasticity of your skin.  Hope this helps

I hate to burst your bubble but I don't think there is any such thing as a magic garment that will help.  To one degree or another, sagging skin is going to be an issue for a good many of us.  Everytime I log on to the site, I look at the before and after pics on my home page.  Some of these women look like models post-op and I get upset with myself thinking I will never look like that.  Sure I can.  It's all about the plastics. I'm not knocking plastics, I just had a mini tummy tuck as part of another procedure and am planning on breast lift and augmentation, full tummy tuck and having my arms done in the spring.

I guess this is something that most of us have to accept.  I hope you are one of the lucky ones.

Thank you all for your responses.  I just turned 40.  I keep my skin hydrated, and drink plenty of water.  I am hoping this plus exercising helps.  My mother had the surgery when she was 50 and she sags horribly.  I can only hope for the best, but I now know not to waste my money on the suit.  Just keep doing what I am doing and add exercise.  That shake weight is looking quite appealing now.

One thing too that can help you determine how much of a problem it will be is: If you are having sagging now, it will be worse after weight loss.  I had plastics. Could have maybe done without it, as my sagging wasn't horrid and clothes hid most, but I had no boobs left and always had this roll of skin above the waistband of my pants and didn't like it.. so got tightened up. Since, have lost another 18 lbs and well... am not so tight anymore... go figure!

I have a medical waist cincher that I got from the medical supply for comfort after my C-Section.  I'm probably wearing it post-op in November, but I don't think that a full-body thing is going to help much because I agree with other posters.  It has a lot to do with the elasticity of your skin.
