Hello All,
I haven't posted anything yet but need a little support. I had RNY three weeks ago tomorrow. Since surgery I've lost 3lbs a week. I really don't feel like eating ANYTHING, I'm sick of the protein shakes. I've been great at taking my vitamins, and have exercised 3-4 times a week but feeling a little bummed I haven't lost more since I'm eating zilch! I guess i should boost my protein and be glad I've lost at least 3 a week. Any thoughts? Also, my mouth is so dry ALL the time and metallic-y tasting.... any cure? Thanks, so excited I did this but I'm afraid I want results now!

Hello! Congratulations on your "new life"! It is very hard to get all those protein shakes in, believe me I know. I had a major problem with those. Fluids is also a big deal, be sure you get in all your liquids. That may be why your mouth is so dry. I have problems with liquids as nothing tastes normal, not even water now. Ice chips taste ok, and I am 8 weeks post op and can drink SOME bottled water if I put it on ice. I have not lost a lot post op either, I have lost a total of 42#, but lost most of it pre-op on the liquid diet. They keep telling me that I lost a lot pre-op and that slows down the post-op loss. I need to be patient! So, I am trying. It will come, get in all your protein, fluids and vitamins and you will do well. Good Luck!
Dry mouth indicates a need for more liquids. Try crystal light. to get more protein in try to mix vanilla protein in with orange crystal light, it tastes alot like an orange creamsicle and makes it more pleasant to get in.
The metalic taste is ketosis, which is right where you want to be. It means you are burning lots of fat. If you are not taking in enough food tho, it will slow your loss a bit. The more weight one has to lose the faster they lose it. So if you are only 100 lbs or 125 lbs overweight, you will lose much slower than someone with 200+ to lose. If you do not get in adequate hydration, your body will store fluid, thus reflecting in a higher weight as well (water weight).
Try sugar free popsicles. I could have never made it through the first month without them. Great flavor, nice and cold and keeps the tongue moist. I must of had 3 or 4 a day my first month out.
Also 12 lbs in a month really isn't bad loss at all. we all lose at different rates. Took me 2 years to drop 120 lbs. But I am now at a normal BMI!
You must do your best to get in the foods your surgeon instructed. Otherwise you will not lose as quickly, and may end up ill. If you have to take just a bit or 2 at a time. Make the meal last a long time, and savor the flavor. Don't drink with meals or 30 min before and after so the food stays in your pouch longer.
Keep us posted on how you are doing, and let us continue to support you and offer advice.
Congrats on you surgery. It will all become much easier soon.

Lost 114 lbs. working on getting rid of a recent 10 lb regain...and WILL succeed!
Emily, this will get better when you get in your fluids and protein supplements. The metalic taste is normal and a reminder that you are losing weight. Frequent tooth brushing helps hide the taste a bit.
Use a tape measure to record changes in measurements when you do not notice the scale moving. Your body will be shrinking, clothes looser. Do remember to take a pic every 2-4 weeks through the process. It took us years to add on the pounds and it will take a bit to lose it too. Your tool is working, coooooool !!!!!!
Use the changes in the tape measure, clothing and pics to remind yourself that you are losing. Welcome to the losing side of surgery. Hugs

Hi Emily, I havent had surgery yet so I dont have much advise. But Congratulations on your surgery and those are some great questions you asked. I was reading the responses from Patrece and Kathy so I know what to exspect if I am not losing much and I am tasting that metalic taste. I have my surgery November 8th. That was a great idea about the vanilla protien mixed with the orange crystal light. Do you know if you have the dumping syndrome?I hear some people get it and some dont. I told my Doctor I guess I will be praying that I do..lol.. Well its nice to meet you. Keep us all posted.

This is some pretty good tasting protein supplement. I have only tried the grape. It mixes with water. Has no grit. Barely any aftertaste. I do mix it with more water than they suggest to dilute it. Also Body fortress (from walmart) is a pretty yummy supplement. 26g protein per scoop. Mix it with milk and it tastes like a milkshake. I guess if you added ice to it, it would be more like a milkshake.
BTW. Congrats on your weightloss. 12 pounds in a month is awesome. Drink plenty of water. Get your protein in. Remember that YOU CAN Do THIS!

Thank you all for your words and advice. I had kind of a rough day and threw up pretty much everything I ate. I'm suppose to be on pureed foods but I think I'll go back to full liquid for a few days till things settle down. Fran and Sabrina congrats on your upcoming surgery. I too have 4 boys (and one girl) and need to be a good healthy example for them. I fit into some jeans I could wear before...yippee. Thanks for helping me stay positive!
