6 days post op

I am 6 days post op and notice every time I eat or drink I am uncomfortable. Then I have noticed other times when I go to eat I'm shaking, like I'm starving and havent ate forever. I even feel hungry at times when I'm feeling uncomfortable.  I'm not sure what this uncomfortable feeling is.. if it's fullness, hunger, over eating, or what it is. I am not eating and drinking at the same time. I've mostly had yogurts (no sugar added), pureed tuna fish, water, cottage cheese and medications. I tried a protein drink but about puked all over because it smelled and tastes like the milk replacer you would mix up for baby calves.

What do you think is happening?

I made up my own protein drink this morning and it didn't taste to bad. if I drink it daily I will get 21.5g of protein if I drink the entire drink. Then I only have to have 20g of protein with food per day to get my minimum of 40g of protein for the day. (I will post in the recipe section).

I'm open to any feedback. Thanks.
Teresa

Teresa, you are only 6 days post-op. At the same day, I was still on IV's, nothing to eat or drink. It's only natural that you are feeling shaky and hungry. Give it time and don't try to ru**** you won't die if you don't eat for a few more days, believe me. Your body is trying to recover from major shock, don't burden it unduly.

Teresa, you are still recovering.  My surgeon's office did not expect me to be up to full protein consumption immediately after surgery.  My team suggests 60-80 grams of protein per day.  It took a few weeks till I was successful in getting in the protein each day.

Please spread your protein out over the day, we can not abosrb the whole day's worth of protein in two sittings.  The shakes are a great idea, sip on it through out the day.  Plus getting in protein as you are instructed by your surgical team.  Are you getting in your supplements, or not starting them yet?

Yes I'm getting my vitamins in.  I was told a minimum of 40g of protein a day and half of that was to come from a protein shake. Which the protein shakes I have such a time stomaching. All I can taste is the protein powder.. yuck yuck yuck..  the smell to a lot of them makes me want to vomit. Yes I made my own.. but I was still able to taste the virtually tasteless powder. I did get it down though.

I guess I'm frustrated right now. Im having strong cravings for everything I can't have or shouldn't have. I'm craving sugar like a mad woman.  I don't understand why I'm hungry all the time or "think" i'm hungry all the time. My friend said she didn't feel hungry for 3 months! I understand everyone is different.

I'm worried.. I don't want to fail. I want to be successful.

Try a sipper cup to not smell the protein shake, some of the dislike may be from the odor.

It takes the mind some time to accept that things have changed, many have no hunger immediately after surgery, but as you realize we are all different.  Do not fret, you have a wonderful new tool to assist in maintaining the new habits that you are learning.

Sip more fluids when you think you are hungry.  I often confuse thirst with hunger.  Keep your thoughts positive, we are here for your support.  Things will settle in a bit and you will fall into good routines.  Hugs

hey gal! I too was like you. I had these insame feelings that felt like hunger pangs shortly after srgery. I was floored. I too expected to be hunger free. But sure enough as some time passed and my body healed, it subsided.

Oddly enough, I found that drinking water made these feelings start. Plain water that is. If i drank crystal light or had sugar free popsicles I was fine. Don't know what it was, but it made me nuts...lol. One thing that can help is to add a scoop of vanilla protein to orange crystal light and sip it over the course of a few hours. Helps get the protein in and tastes alot like an orange creamsicle..

See if you can put together that these hunger feelings come with a certain thing you do drink or eat. Mine did pass after a few weeks. Hope yours does as well.
As far as the eating.. eat very tiny bites and very very slowly, also take tiny sips when drinking. You are healing and need to baby you insides for a bit.
