Protein immediately postop?

Just wondering what they give you in the hospital to drink/eat.  I worked with postop bariatric patients, but on the night shift.  So I am not for sure what they got on their meal trays.  I think it was just clear liquids.  What do they give us for protein? or do we start the protein when we get home/?

Protein supplements are usually started after you get home. Your surgeon and nutritionist should give you instructions on how and when to begin and how much as well. Its hard for me to answer this more thoroughly, as each surgeon has his own regimine.
Best of luck lady!

thank you all for your comments.  I guess that my nutritionist will have me in to go over the pre-op and post-op diet once I am approved by my insurance.

The "not knowing" is killing me.  Im'psyched about the surgery. It cant come soon enough.

the day after my surgery I was able to have 30cc of diluted juice every hour. the next I could have carnation instant breakfast, purreed peaches, and an assortment of other foods. The last menu I had to choose from had purreed pork loin w/ gravy, purreed chicken with gravy, fortified soups, and other beverages. I know a guy who had the surgery and he said he lived on some special chicken broth for like a month. I think each place varies on what they feel is correct for people to eat after surgery. I was told I needed to have a minimum of 40g of protein a day, with half of that coming from a protien supplement.

My surgical team hands out a booklet with the pre op and post op diets, routine follow up appointments, routine labs at the informational meeting. We are encouraged to ask lots of questions as they arise during the pre op nutritional consults.

Ask your surgical team any and all questions as they arise. I bring a list of questions to each appointment. Even working in health care, we still have questions. I work night shift too, things are different on the shift. I have questions about things that happen during the light of day for our patients too. Ask your co workers questions, I find that mine are supportive. Hugs
