Question about Goal

My Doctor stated before I had my surgery that he wanted me to reach 165 for my goal weight. When I log that into a BMI converter it puts me at a BMI of 25 which is still over weight.  The standards are this.
  • Underweight = <18.5
  • Normal weight = 18.5–24.9
  • Overweight = 25–29.9
  •
  • Obesity = BMI of 30 or greater
I am 5ft 8in tall and should be 155 or 160.  Is this unrealistic?  I totally feel great where I am now but have another 50 pounds to go for his goal.  I am just confused.

The goals our doctors set for us oten are not based on a BMI. They are based mor on what they feel would be a healthy weight for us. So if you go with 162 or 163 for a goal, that should put you just insdie a normal BMI. But a .1 bmi, is very little, so I wouldn't sweat it. Besides, you will hit a point that your body says.. ok I am done losing. Then to lose more after that it is sheer hard hard work and discipline. Go with what feels good for you. The rest is only numbers. What do numbers know about how we feel anyways? The primary goal is to get healthy active and feel good.

Of course I'm a newby and have not even had my surgery yet, but my doctor wasn't as concerned about me getting to my "goal weight" or what is "normal" for my height, but rather getting off medications, lowering cholesterol, gaining energy, getting out of the pre-diabetic zone, having more quality of life, getting pain-free, lowering my risks for heart disease, etc.  I think an individual's goal weight can be quite personal.  For me, however, I don't think I would want to be in an obese classification no matter what just because of the health ramifications.  Probably should discuss the issue in more detail with your doctor and get his/her take on it.  Hope you get some clarity on the matter!
All the best,

My surgical team is not focusing on normal BMI for me.  Improvement in health, habits and live tolerance.  Surgical success is losing a percent of excess weight.  The dietician figured out the percent of excess weight that I have lost.  According to the numbers she crunched, and don't ask me to repeat the crunching process, I have done well and may not lose much more.

I can take this answer, or I can jump on the wagon and use my tool to its best postential.  I am still working the program, one snack/meal at a time, one step/mile at a time.  I still want to lose more weight, my goal is health, not being model thin.

Focus on health, not a "magic" number on the scale.  Health for all of us.  Hugs
