Blood Glucose Levels
I have a question for those who were diabetic and had the surgery, let me give a little background:
When I left the hospital after my surgery my blood sugar was ranging between 109-115. Yesterday my blood sugar started going up, now it is at 153, and I'm starting to freak out!
So my question is: Has anyone experienced blood glucose levels going up? I really do not want to go back to pills or shots.

Hi Liz, any stress will cause you blood sugars to go up. And you recent stress of surgery and recovery may be the cause. I am also diabetic, I was on large quantities of insulin and large doses of pills for blood sugar control. I took my last dose of insulin the day before surgery. I am still on pills, and probably will be for life. I have had diabetes, type 2 for several years now, and have a strong family history of type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
Managing glucose levels is a balance of food, activity or exercise and meds. I would consult your pcp or surgeon to see what they recommend. A short term back on pills may be in order while you are losing weight. This does not mean that you are a failure. Each and every one of us has different stresses and different degrees of pancreas function and insulin resistance. With weight loss, you insulin resistance will change and you need for meds reduced. Take this one step at a time. First thing is to consult someone about your bloodsugar levels. Are you being followed by someone at a diabetic center? That would be another good place to start.
What are you eating/drinking at this time? Higher carb fluids will rais you blood glucose levels. Hope this evens out quickly for you, keep us posted. Hugs

Thanks Kathy,
I just had my surgery a week ago, so I'm still on 2oz of liquids ( including protein shake). My surgeon has upped my diet to cottage cheese, yogurt, or half an egg. No high carb drinks, jus****er. Yes I am stressed, there are many factors, this is just one of them. I will try contacting my surgeon or pcp. Thanks again Kathy.
