Thanks for the advice. I am usually one of those stoic people who just try  to "tough it out" when I feel pain or even nausea. Glad you made the comment to ask for something right away if I feel nausea. I really don't want to strain my incision.  I really value what you have to say and will take the advice given me by you and others who have gone through this. Nobody knows like you all (or as we say in the South Y"all)!

Grace and peace be with you all.

Hi Kathy, I am also having surgery on the 18th.. I will b my docs 1st surgical patient.. Thank goodness I get to have him wide awake and full of energy for me... I am very very scared but I know that I am in good hands. My doc has been doing this procedure for over 10 yrs so its all good. I am having the RNY so I hope I recover from pain FAST.... I hate pain I'm a big baby... lol.. I was wondering, I was prescribed Nexium for after my surgery and wanted to know if that was for the gas pain I might get after the surgery? I'm sure it could be but wanted to know if any1 has had it b4 and if it works really well. Pls let me knw?? I can't wait to start my journey on the losers bench for I wait abt 3 yrs for this. ITS ABOUT DAMN TIME!! lol Will post soon as I can.. They say I will b home in 2 days so I hope to post really soon. Until then God Bless to all especially upcoming surgeries and b safe...

Nexium is a medication used to treat GERD (acid reflux disease). It is not uncommon for surgeons to prescribe this following this procedure. It helps to protect against damage to your new pouch and where you are healing internally. It helps prevent irritation allowing things to heal properly.

Congrats on your upcoming surgery! Even tho you are your surgeons first procedure.. I am sure he will have someone with experience at his side.

You will be offered pain meds to help you through the initial phase. Most times after surgery you will either have a pain pump that you can push the button on to get meds when you need them, or they will give you IV meds. Yes there is some pain, and definately discomfort, but once you get through the day of surgery, you may be suprised. It may not be as painful as you anticipate. Be sure to get in as many little walks as you can. It helps prevent clots, and move the air out of you from the surgery. Sip sip sip! rest as your body requests. This is when we do most of our healing.

Congrats on having surgery this week Rachel.  My surgeon prescribed pepcid for the first 6 months after surgery to help prevent ulcers on my healing pouch.  Nexium works very much the same.  I say, yes, anything to have success.

The pain was minimal, meds took care of it.  I was using only tylenol by 10 days to 2 weeks out from surgery.  Do get up for frequent short walks as soon as possible after surgery.  Pack your lip balm, slip on slippers and a pillow to pad the seat belt for the trip home.  Sip, sip, rest, walk, repeat endlessly.  Hugs
