Bariatric Buddy
Frustrated
I went to my support group last night and I told my story about how many complications I had and the leader kinda blew me off because she had no complications so she feels that its not that bad. I feel that people need to know that there are two sides to that surgery. There are some people that have no problems at all which is great. Then there is that other group that has lots of problems. For me I have a happy ending but for some they dont and before you go into that surgery make sure you make a list of all your pros and cons and make sure youre 100% ready to change your life forever. After this surgery if you go back to your old eating habits your going to have alot of vomiting and you can even die. You still have to diet and exercise. If you do all that and take care of yourself you will have big success in your life. If you havent had the surgery good luck to you and Im here to answer any questions you may have. Also make sure your family is supporting you. I did not get alot of support and I cried alot because I felt so alone. Things are better now but its still hard but Ive always been a fighter and Im not going to stop now. GOD BLESS!
Tina ((((((Hugs))))))), so sorry that you felt that way at support group last night. Yes, there are complications, you had your share and more. I want to let you know that we are here for your support. Are you getting good support from your family? That means so much for success. You keep fighting for your health, follow the plan set out by your surgical team.
Thanks for sharing your story with us. We all need to have a candid discussion of risks with our surgeon, then decide with all the facts, what is our own best option.
We do not want to scare new folks away, but knowing that there are complications possible is also needed. Seeing that you overcame your complications is encouraging. Continue to spread the word that following MD directions is needed for success.

So sorry the support group leader blew you off. Shame on her! It makes sense that everyone should speak of their own experience without be hushed or ignored. Maybe she shouldn't be a support group leader.
I'm glad things worked out for you and that your are doing well. What surgery did you have? And When did you have it?

Wow.. a support group that will only allow the positive to be shared? If this journey were all peaches and cream, why on earth would we need support at all? I would never handle things that way in my support group...ever! (I have a live group in addition to this one). I think it is also important for people to go into this with their eyes open to the possibilities of things that can cause difficulty and challenges.
I am one of the lucky ones! Never had any complications. My daughter on the other hand did have some, requiring 2 extra surgeries. But she still says she'd do it all again. (she didn't say this right after the surgeries...lol but she does today).
I have to say, that as a support group leader, the biggest challenge is trying to help those who just will not help themselves. they ask for help, but then do nothing with it or have a million excuses as to why they can't. I am going through this with a gal in my live group. I get frustrated at times, because I can't MAKE her take the right steps, and she just has good intentions, but no umph to follow up. I am being patient and continue to try to help her. She regained 115 of 190 that she lost.
