i am trying to do this and i know i have to answer what makes this time different which ive been thinking a lot about. but my taste buds are insanely picky. and now i am loosing taste. been on a 1/2 day liquid diet for 2 days and am eating healthier. we went to whole grains this month and got rid of the hamburger helper, etc and mostly no processed foods and am making most things fresh. but tonight meal just was awful. i can be a bad cook but i did everything according to the directions and the brown rice chicken combo was so gagingly gross. i could barely handle whole grain pasta before this new lifestyle started. how can i make this work i feel like i am going to die if i have to eat this stuff the rest of my life. i want surgery and want to make this work but i have no idea of what to do other than taking carbs out competely and just eating frozen and boiled veggies. any tips, advise, or support ?? well ive gotta go my daughter just got home and we need to go to the library and i want to find something else to eat. i just don't know what to do sometimes. i am having such a hard time with the whole grain carbs.

best advice i can offer here is to just not do the breads, pasta's etc, if you cannot stand the whole grains. remember too, tastes and preferences can change after surgery. You will have a definate learning curve here, and you will need to get creative with yur food prep ideas. To be honest with you, I ate absolutely no grains until i was a year out, other than a 1/4 of a flour tortilla on very rare occassion with my egg or with fat free refried beans with a touch of salsa mixed in, topped with a touch of shredded cheddar.

Basically, you won't be able to eat pasta of any kind post-op for a long time, I hate to tell you. Your tastes WILL change, forget what you like now.

I hope you realize that what you are trying to do is to change your life vis-a-vis food forever, because whatever you have been doing to date has brought you here. If you don't want this change, please rethink your decision to have WLS.

I'm sorry if I sound a little harsh, but I'm only trying to show you the hard truth as I learned it. I was not able to keep down any sort of pasta or most carbs until last month and when I did so, I stopped losing weight, so now I'm going back to WLS basics, which are an almost pure protein diet with just a few bites of green stuff.

Over 110 lbs lost!! (Finally!)

PLEASE DONT GIVE UP!
I have a hard time with pasta and untoasted breads.  I can do crackers, tortilla chips..etc.
but pasta and regular breads make me feel awful!

Your tasts will evolve as your go through this journey.  Now I mostly eat chicken, turkey, eggs, beans, steamed veggies with cheese sauce (yummy!).  Beef and pork seem to be a bit of an issue.  Mostly anything that has a high fat content stay away from! (Post op of course).

I have a ton of recipes at home (i'm currently at work). If I can remember, I will make copies for you and email them to you tomorrow.

Remember.. change is not easy, but it's so worth it!

thanks. its not that im not willing to change, its just so unlike anything i've ever done. i've decided to either get fruit or veggies with dinner and not pasta. the bread i cant give up yet but am buying healthier bread and only eat it a few times a week. its ok to sound harsh i expected at least 1 person would. i dont want to die, i want to be around for my daughter with fewer health problems is the main reason for the surgery. ive been thinking about it for 4 years but was never ready and had insurance problems so i didnt go through with any appointments. i see the nut in a week and look forward to it. i definetly am just going to stay away from carbs for me at least. i love steamed veggies but i overcook them and hubby wont let me have anything in a cheese sauce, says its bad for me. lol. thanks for the support and i've love those recipes. i wont give up. i wanted a chinese buffet so bad last night but we went to applebees and i got something off the weigh****chers menu. it was really healthy and really good too. my tastes are already changing and i havent had surgery yet but ive been changing what i eat for a month and a half now... is this normal??

Yep it is normal. The healthier you eat, the more your body likes it, and your tastes will change accordingly with time. Take it moment by moment. Like it says in my signature here at the bottom of my message "my mantra" JUST DO the next RIGHT thing!

Yes.. a good mantra for sure!
On that small potato... just say noooo to butter! try fat free sour cream, or ranch dressing (reduced fat or fat free) even molly mcbutter. Just choose your toppings wisely! Add a tad of shredded cheddar even.

I to love chinese food. I have a wonderful recipe for pan "fried" egg rolls.
Very good to eat without all the salt and fat from the chinese restaurant.
I will email it to you.

Go to cookinglight.com  I get a lot of my recipes from there. Most are easy to make and they give you all the nutritional info.

PM me your weekly menu and I will help as I am able to make the dishes healthier. I am so glad to hear that you are trying to make the needed changes. This takes time to adjust to the different cooking style. Wish I lived closer and could come to your kitchen, it is so much fun to learn new things in the comfort of one's own kitchen. There are many sites with health meal options. Let's see what we can do. Hugs Sara, Kathy
