9 month follow up
Hey everyone, it has officially been 9 months since surgery. I am stalled out, and have been for a few weeks, seems like forever in the scheme of things. I am getting in my protein, fluids, supplements and walking. Labs are in the normal range, except for my HgA1C, which climbed a little (diabetes test). So, you say, what is the problem??? I wish I knew. So the team wants me to start journaling my food again, meet with the dietician and see what I can tweek. I find journaling a chore as some of you do. BUT, I will do my best to log my foods, blood sugars and exercise to see how things fall into place.
I was suggested to change up my exercise routine. I had been walking the dogs daily, long walks several times a week, up to an hour or so. I am supposed to jog, yes, I wrote jog. I haven't jogged in over 20 years. I tried it the other day while out with the dogs and my husband. I was told to jog for 1 minute and walk for 5 and repeat for a start. We were out for 50 minutes and I did manage to jog 5 blocks total. My legs felt like rubber. We also walked up the only hill that I could find in town. Ugh, the pups had a blast. I walked/racewalked partway up several side streets while my hubby took the straight path to get more distance in with the walk. Dennis idea of a walk is a leisurely stroll, not exercise. It worked well for us. I at least got him out of the house and we walked beside each other for short times during my walk part of the walk. Yesterday, we took the walk around the local lake, about a mile in distance. I took the longer paths, went out on the fishing piers, travelled around adjacent blocks doing a race walk pace. You know, the one where your butt shifts. lol. I do believe that Dennis enjoyed watching me from behind. Hmmmmm I do believe it confused the pooches a little when we took separate paths around the same block, I took the long route of course. The pooches were tired when we returned too, they napped well.
So, I was told the same things that we share here on OH, journal food, change up the exercise, do weight training and follow up. Can I do this? Will I do this?? I will try my bestest...... Let's kick it up a notch this week everyone. Hugs

Sounds like a plan to me.
So far I've only had one stall -- from week 6 - 9 -- where I didn't lose that first pound.
I've also had weeks that I only lost 1/2 pound and when I see those, the first thing I do is switch up my exercise routine to get the weight loss going again. The second thing is that I up my calories by 50 - 100 a day so my body gets out of starvation mode. I might also have a couple of 800 - 900 calorie days and then throw in an 1100 calorie day just to keep my body guessing. But ever since doing those things I have consistently had a weekly loss.
I know the journaling is a pain, but it's the one thing that keeps me focused on what I'm doing and tells me where I'm lacking or where I'm overdoing it.
Just keep up the good work. It will start falling off again.

You have come so far in those nine months. I really admire you. It sounds like ou have such a fulfilling active lifestyle now. I think Prevention magazine had a good article a month or two ago about starting to jog again, and getting people to jog regularly again, like a suggested table for the one minute jog/five minute walk thing.
Good luck! I know you can do it. You will definitely do this. =)

((((Kathy)))) you can do this!! Journaling is only hard at the beginning. Once you are doing it on a routine basis it only takes a few minutes a day. Journaling has saved me over and over again, since I could catch myself before I did huge damage plus it heightens my sense of caution and makes me feel more responsible. I don't show my journal anywhere, so I only answer to myself, but I find that is enough.
I can't help you out with the exercise, as you know, I don't do it yet. I do move around as much as I can in the house and do some light physiotherapy, but that's all. Weights, I hear, are the best way to increase muscle mass and since muscle uses up many more calories than fat, you end up losing faster.
Follow your doc's advice, Kathy and you will soon become unstuck!
