Hair Color
I had surgery in Sept '09 and my first color was in Dec '09 I had no problems I let my stylist know about my surgery and she said it was ok. I didn't go blonde since it was a harsher process but that was fine with me. lol make sure you are taking your biotin it really helps on the regrowth. I did cut mine a little shorter just so it wouldn't be so noticeable. Good luck
It is best to wait until about 6 months post op. this is when the hair thinning usually starts to subside. Also, do take biotin (b vitamins) it is awesome for the stregnth and health of your hair. If you color sooner, request a very gentle formula and be sure to get in all protein and biotin to help protect your hair.

I would keep to the gentle stuff that comes in the Clairol box at the drugstore and not venture too far from your natural shade. If you use anything more than semi-permanent your hair might fall out. My nutritionist said that post surgery you have to be very attentive to your protein levels or your hair will begin to fall out. I honestly think that a gentle splash of color shouldn't do much harm though.
Former hairdresser/salon owner here. I just consulted with one of my friends who owns an upscale salon she is in agreement with me on this matter. Coloring your hair doesn't weaken it.(Unless the shaft has been damaged, IE: bleaching, or having someone who isn't familiar with color and how to use it, or using harsh product). If it falls out it is because the root has not had the nutrition it needs. Color only stays on the shaft of the hair. The root sits below a few skin layers.
To be safe I would suggest going to a well known colorist, there are many that specialize in color only. Don't use any over the counter products as they are NOT the same quality as a professional product. If you use a knowledgeable colorist they may suggest that the color be applied up to, but not touching the scalp, although I don't believe this is necessary.
I made 2 other calls to friends that also own salons, if they suggest anything different I will update you.
I am sure there will be people who may not agree with my suggestions, they are suggestions and no one should do anything they may not agree with. No negative comments please.
Take care
