Thinking about gastric sleeve-advice?
Hello and welcome to our group! I personally had the gastric bypass (RNY) so, I can't share my experience on the sleeve, but i know we do have a member or two that has had it, and hopefully they will chime in.
I do know that the one disadvantage to the sleeve is that you do not get the malabsorptive issues, which while that may sound good in some ways, it can be a disadvantage in others. You won't dump like a bypass patient will, so unless you are very disciplined, you may be temopted to eat things you should not. BUT with that said, if you are disciplined in your choices, you can lose susbstantial weight with this procedure.
Healing depends upon a few things.. is it an open or laproscopic procedure? Laproscopic is faster healing time. Are you diabetic? Diabetics heal more slowly. Getting in plenty of protein accelerates healing as well. So be sure to get in the protein needs of your body post-op which most surgeons recommend 60 to 100 grams daily.
I am SOOOOOOOOO thankful for the RNY I had! I'd do it again in a heartbeat. No regrets here at all. I have gone from 270 to 154 (so far) and from a tight 24 to an 8 in pants. I am JUST at a normal BMI for my height. for the first time in about 20 + years. I can literally RUN around and chase my grandbabies. No more high blood pressure, and my pitting edma (which was Bad and constant) has been resolved. I can bend over and breathe at the same time, fit very comfortably into booths, airplane seats, etc.
This is an amazing and remarkable journey, but know too, that it can have its hard times and challenges. Thats where this group can be of a lot of help! we encourage and support each other throughthe good and the tough.
Again.. welcome! So glad tohave you here!

Lost 114 lbs. working on getting rid of a recent 10 lb regain...and WILL succeed!
donna, welcome to our group. like patrece, i had rny also. mine was open though because of my weight. i weighed 283 and the surgeon felt it was safer in the long run. i wish he would have done laproscopic, but hey, he is the man. lol
i don't know anything about the sleeve but you can go to weight loss surgery above to the left and then check out the sleeve. also wls for dummies tells about all different types of surgeries and also life after wls along with some recipes. i highly recommend the book. good luck to you. vick

EXPERIENCE WITHOUT REFLECTION IS HOLLOW
Welcome to the family Donna.
I too had RNY, sleeve was not an option for me at the surgery center I chose. If I had to do this again, I would still choose wls, the RNY is working for me. There is a right procedure for everyone. Do your research, consult with your surgoen and decide what is best for you. I do not talk anyone into any particular procedure, just make the decision that is best for you and follow the protocol set out by your surgeon.
Come back often to share, ask questions, and just babble if that helps. Chat session tomorrow evening, I will post a short cut to the chat session in the morning. Welcome to the bariatric buddy family. Hugs

Hi Donna, welcome :)
I had the Sleeve on 1/26/10. It was done laparoscopically and I had no complications. Most people leave the hospital 1-3 days after the operation. I was kept for six days because I had/have some serious co-morbidities and my surgeon was playing it safe. While in-hospital I was on IV's and was not even allowed to drink water. After I got home, I had 2 weeks of liquids and 1 week of mushies. I had a tube that was removed on the 3rd week. I now eat pretty normally, or as normally as my restriction allows me. I won't lie to you, I had some days of intense hunger but that disapared as soon as I started eating solid food again. I healed quickly and with less pain than anticipated. As a matter of fact, I was up and pacing the room just a few hours after the operation. I've lost 51 lbs so far, which to me is pretty amazing, considering I'm mostly in a wheelchair and can't exercise.
I LOVE my sleeve!!
