Protein Bar

I just wanted to give you guys a heads up on a protein bar I found at Walmart.  It's called Pure Protein.  20 grams protein, 18 carbs, 3 sugar, 200 calories.  They were $6.37 for a box of 6 bars which I thought was pretty good.

The only question I had about them is that they are a protein blend of whey protein hydrolysate and whey protein isolate.  I didn't know if the two different types of whey make a difference or not.

Anyway, just wanted to pass it along.  They taste better than most of the other protein bars I've had.

Hi Colleen, looked the two kinds of protein up, still greek to me which is better.  Just get as much of your protein from real foods as you can.  Here's what I found out......

In addition to whey protein isolate and whey protein concentrate, there is also whey protein hydrolysate. What is whey protein Hydrolysate? Whey Hydrolysate undertakes higher processing than either whey isolate or concentrate. It consequently is the highest quality protein but with this usually comes an increase in retail price.

Whey hydrolysate is easy on the digestive system and has a high absorption rate. The high absorption rate means it is the most effective whey to take either pre or post workout. The high protein content means only a small amount is needed, so please check individual manufacturers for dosages. Whey hydrolysate can be absorbed in anywhere between 10 and 30 minutes*. It is not really suitable for the ‘snack meal’ as it contains so little biologically active proteins (these are destroyed during the amount of processing hydrolysate undergoes.)

*Based on a serving in water on an empty stomach. Absorption rates can vary if taken on empty stomachs or with other delivery systems i.e. milk instead of water.

Based on information gathered from Muscle and Fitness Magazine December 2008

Whey protein isolate is a highly processed whey protein. By weight, whey protein isolate is 90% protein. This makes it a purer protein than whey protein concentrate. It is also absorbed faster into your muscles, which is beneficial if you are taking whey protein post workout, as this is when your muscles require protein the most.

Whey protein isolate, despite losing some of its immune boosting properties through its multiple processing, is still ripe with Glutathione levels, which are still important for the immune system. Whey protein isolate also has lower lactose levels than concentrate. Because of its higher quality however, whey protein isolate can be more expensive

hmmm I wonder how the carb content of those compare with others.? For me, when something that small contains that many calories and carbs.. I shy away from them. It doesn't mean you should.. but At that amount of carbs and calories, thats like a whole meal for us wls'ers. You may even consider breaking it in half to use for 2 seperate servings.

I agree with Kathy that it is best to try to get most of our protein from our actual meals..  But if you struggle with that, this may be a way to get in the extra you need.  Have you tried to find any with a lower carb and calorie content? Not sure if they even exist.. Every time I have thought about getting some, I read the carb and calorie content and put em back..lol.

I know the doctors are all over the place on some of this stuff.  I thought the carbs were a little high but on the other hand the nutritionist tells me my daily target for carbs is 100.  Because I'm eating so little right now, I don't worry so much about the calories, and truthfully, it does curb my craving for sweets.  The surgeon keeps telling me to drink at least 3 shakes a day.  I don't think I could eat enough food to get all my protein there.

My nutritionist is always willing to help out, I am going to run up there on Monday with the empty package and see what she has to say and I'll let you guys know.

I actually have been eating the same bars. My surgeon told me about them and asked me to start eating them instead of my atkins bars. The carbs were a little high I thought but it's something that my Dr wants me to do...so I am. BTW, the two types I like are the chocolate chip cookie dough and the peanut butter. I really like them too.

take care,

Colleen,

Those are the ONLY protein bars that my nutritionist recommends.
Like Susan, I prefer the peanut butter and the chocolate chip flavors. They are high in calories and carbs, but compared to other brands, they are much higher quality and fewer sugar carbs for the amount of protein. You can get them even cheaper at Sam's club in a big box. They are quite heavy and dense, and so sometimes I can only eat half of one at a time. But since I still struggle with meats, they are a big help in reaching my protein goals and they give you something "portable" that you can throw in your purse and go.

By the way, for anyone who uses them: there are $1.00 off coupons for the Body Fortress Protein powder and for the Pure Protein bars in the latest issue of Woman's World.
