Hi and welcome! You had a lot of input on the RnY, so I thought I'd put in a word about the VSG (Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy) that  had so you can examine one more option. I was "Sleeved" on 1/26/10 at almost 290 lbs. I am 54 years old, and have several co-morbidities. I chose the Sleeve because it doesn't have malabsorption issues (no one messed with my intestines!). Since I also suffer from MS and arthritis and FMS and several other syndromes, I didn't want to risk being unable to absorb necessary medicines. The Sleeve relies on stricture and the curbing of appetite due to the removal of the Gherlin producing gland in the stomach. It's a very safe operation with almost a 0% mortality and extremely low complication rates. You can read all about it in the VSG section and ask questions in the VSG forum. I was as apprehensive as you are going into WLS, but I can say that everything has gone quite well with me and I would recommend the Sleeve very highly. I would never go for any other type of WL surgery.

Best of luck with your journey.

kristi, welcome to our group, hope u will get the support that you are seeking here.  i had open rny  in jan of 09 and have lost almost 150 pounds (counting the presurgery diet).  i chose this type of surgery because it is what my surgeon recommended and what medicare would pay for.  you are doing the right thing by getting all the info that you can.  good luck to you no matter which one you choose.  vick

Thanks to all of you for replying. I feel lucky to have found this website with all of your support. I have spent all day every day researching WLS and have decided to go with DS as it will fit my life style the best. Yrs ago when I looked into WLS i was thinking of getting the lapband. thank goodness i did not go though with it, it would not suit me as well as the DS. I am sure i will see you all on here frequently as i am sure i will be asking lots of questions and or venting about life and my journey to get my life back.

thanks again to all of you.

I had a DS 12/7/10 and have lost 54 pounds.  I'd have the same surgery again.  There were a couple complications and I spent nine days in the hospital, but I'm fine now.
