Eating too Fast???

I am concerned I am eating too fast.  For example, I will have 1 ounce of salmon, 1 ounce of cooked carrots and 2 ounces of applesauce (I am 4 weeks out).   It takes me a out 15 minutes to eat.  I keep hearing 30 minutes.  Do people take naps in between bites?

What are some tricks other than putting down your fork between bites or chewing for a minute?

I also posted on the main forum.

Thanks

If you are eating to fast you will know it believe me. I ate too fast once and it came right back up. I had my surgery the same day you did. They say 20-30 minutes but it takes me about 15 minutes also. Just do not over do it or you will be giving it right back. Hope this helps!

Thanks,

I am trying to eat slower, but it is hard.  I am very good about weighing my portions also.

Hey, having the same surgery date, we should stay in touch for our surgerversary.

Thanks for the response.

you need to be eating all your protein first, three ounces, and then eat your veggies if you have room left. the protein is sthe most important thing now.  unless your doc told you otherwise that is.  you will never get your protein in if you eat the way you do right now. one ounce of protein is not enough, especially for a  man.  eating protein protects your heart, it is very important.  try putting your fork down, that will slow you down and chew 24 times. that will slow you down. i must admit i have trouble with this also.  i'll try to slow down if you will. are u keeping a log on how much protein and liquids you are getting in?  this will show you exactly what is going on. i bought a real nice scale from a resteraur outlet and  measure my protein, i eat 3-4 oz of protein each meal and i use supplemental protein powder. good luck to you. vick

Steve, I know that you are on the road a lot for work.  Patrece once maybe even lots of times told me to have 2 bites of protein for every bite of non protein food.  I cut the protein up into bits the size of a pea and chew, chew, chew.  You may want to bring a newspaper if you are dining alone, read a paragraph or two between bites.  If dining with someone, chatter a bit between bites.  Putting the small portion in my mouth at a time helps to extend the meal.  Even consider bringing along a small (baby size) spoon.  Helps to limit what can be brought to the mouth in a bite.

Hey Steve... they pretty much said it all. Some people set tmers. Some read a paragraph between bites, some just wing it and hope for the best. My docs office said make it last 20 minutes. I still struggle with this, but do my best, and have found that if I read while I eat and set the fork down in between bites, it helps tremendously.

I do have a question for you.. All of our surgeons are different, but when I was 4 weeks out  I was supposed to be eating around 1 oz to 1.5 oz.  So what I am wondering is if the amounts you are consuming is what your doctor has instructed you on.

Usually the general rule of thumb is (THIS is for RNY patients by the way)
beginning at 1 oz.
By three months 1/4 cup (2 oz)
By 6 months 1/2 cup (4 ounces)
By nice months 3/4 cup (6 oz)
By one year 1 cup (8 oz)
After that we should maintain our intake to between 1 and 1 1/2 cups for life.

Again, all docs have thier own protocol. and I always encourage folks to follow dr's orders. Just wanted to ask and share what I know in this area.
But you are doing awesome! Keep up the great work. It may also help you eat slower if you just put down the fork between bites and chew chew chew until there;'s nothing left to chew.

It was great to "meet" you in chat last evening!
