Travelling and Diet

I will be travelling to Denver next week.  I am working on a plan to make sure I can stick to my diet.  I am two weeks post surgery so I am still on Soft Mechanical.

Any suggestions???

I would be sure to bring a cooler, and in it pack plenty of things like cottage cheese, yogurt, protein supplements, pureed foods that you find tolorable. Also if you plan to eat at any restaraunts, scrambled eggs can work, but ask them to prepare them without a lot of fat or butter added. Instant oatmeal or cream of wheat may be an option as well.  It is very hard to plan foods for travel this early out.. Hopefully you will have a microwave in your room for some pureed foods you bring.

Who else can help out here?????

The only things that come to my mind are these:

1. When you go to restaurants, order soup, mashed potatoes, mashed anything.

2. Take along on your trip already prepared foods that you can eat in the privacy of your hotel room. If you have a mini-fridge in your hotel room, you can store them there so they don't go bad.

3. If you know where you will be going for a meal, call ahead of time and ask them to prepare something for you in a way that you can eat it.

4. Eggs (if you can eat them) are always a good option when eating out. Scrambled or in a lightly cooked omelet, they are good for any meal.

5. Bring along some of your protein so you can make your protein drinks in the privacy of your room.

I've ran out of ideas. Probably someone else can give you more.

I think you got some great answers, stedix.   I would add to buy some premixed protein drinks that are low sugar: Boost Glucose formula, Special K protein drink, pre-mixed Carnation Instant Breakfast sugar free.  They will help you.

I alwas ordered a  cup of soup at that stage, and never could eat it all.  Nice.  or in the morning, oatmeal and milk.

Good luck - your dedication will pay off big time!!!

I went on a road trip at 4 weeks out.  Carried a cooler with yogurt, cottage cheese and string cheese.  When eating at a restaurant, choose the soup, refried beans.  Truck stops have several egg selections.  Even ate at an Italian restaurant, the waitress was great about coming up with something off menu that I was able to eat, had a tuna steak(very tender), only could eat a few bites.  They insisted on decorating the plate with tomato slices and cucumber slices, very pretty.  Suplemented with protein shakes as needed.  Best of luck with the trip.

Thanks Kathy for the tips.   Since I will be flying, I probably won't take a cooler, however, I will stop at a target or walmart and pick up what I need.  I can get some yogurt, fruit cups, tuna, etc and still plan my meals.

The restaurant tips are also great.  I have not eaten out yet since my surgery.  A little afraid to I guess.
