Back Pain after Surgery

Justine L.

I had surgery 3/2 and just came home Sat, finally had bowel movements and was eating purred so they let me come.  Pain in the stoma*****ision area are very minimal, my main cause of pain is my back from laying/sitting so much.  When I 1st woke from surgery this was this biggest problem I felt and while in the hospital they were giving me some anti-inflammatory in my IV... the Dr. just gave me liquid vicoden to take home which isn't helping my back at all.  I asked him what I could do and he said to crush 1-2 Advil and I was surprised and said I thought we weren't supposed to have that... he said not usually but if the pain is bad enough and I don't abuse how much I use it should be okay, but I'm still nervous to do it.  Does anyone else have ideas to relieve back pain?  it's lower ache that just makes me want to puke it's so tight and sore.  I've tried bengay, heating pads, hot showers, massages, lots of walking - nothings helping... Could my pain be caused by gas?  It was bad again Sun morning (still is) so I called my surgeons office, they prescribed a muscle relaxer - husband ran all the way to town and I expected relief... none whatsoever!  the only relief is when i take my liquid vicoden but can only take that every 4 hours, after 2.5 I'm miserable again... I'm constantly rocking back and forth trying to loosen muscles - nothing is working...

Advice would be great - thanks!

I'm sorry you are in so much pain right now.  I had my doctor put me on liquid Vicodin permanently due to arthritis in my neck which causes migraines.

Maybe you need a stronger dose.  The doctor may be reluctant because it is a controlled subtance, but I don't see the point in being in pain and miserable if there is a way around it.

Good luck.

sorry to hear you are in such pain. have you tried ice packs? moist cold helps the inflammation go down. hope u get to feeling better soon.  ask your pharmacist if you can take the vicoden every three hours until this goes away.  good luck to you.  vick

So sorry that you are miserable with the back pain Justine. A great reason to call the surgeon for additional medications. Maybe a few sessions of physical therapy to relieve the distress. Relax the best you can, tension doubles the discomfort of pain. Some relaxing music, mental images of comfortable places, let your mind take you body to a warm sandy beach with a light wind blowing, sink your toes mentally into the warm sand, breathe deeply and go with the mental picture. Sometimes a fragrence will help with relaxing, cinnamon, vanilla, favorite perfume/cologne. Hope the discomfort resolves asap. Hugs

It is definately hard on the back and the back side, when we can no roll over onto our sides or front. I also think that part of what you are experiencing is gas, they blew you  up in there to do the surgery, and it takes a while to work it out of the system. Once I left the hospital, my biggest discomfort was the gas pressure and pain. Walking helps move it out, but it does take some time. Wonder if mylicon would help? maybe ask your doc about this.. but that would only help if it is indeed gas pains.Just not sure if it helps with gas outside of the digestive tract.

Hope you get relief very soon!
