Is it common to lose hair after WLS?  My mom keeps having to pick up handfuls of my hair.

Yes, hair loss after surgery is very normal and usually starts at about 3 months post-op.  I have heard all kinds of reasons why....the trauma of the surgery and shock to the body; the anesthesia; not getting enough protein, etc.  But, whatever the reason, it happens for many of us.  I am at 4 months post-op and it is definitely happening to me!

It is often suggested that we take Biotin (a supplemnt you can get on the shelves) to help with the hair loss.  I started taking Biotin right before surgery, although I had to stop at the time of my surgery along with all other supplements, and then started taking it again about a month out.  Whether it is helping or not, I am not sure.  But I am still taking it, and I am still losing hair.  I understand the hair loss will stop sometime around 6-8 months post op.

Hmmmm, wonder if I will have hair left by then!!  :P

Seriously, though, I have read on the boards that no one has ever lost ALL their hair.

Hope this helps!!

Yes Rue, some hair loss is normal, Guayaw listed the possiblities. I lost some, started taking biotin with in a couple of weeks of the discovery of hair loss and now seem to be losing just the normal day to day loss.

Thanks y'all for your help.  My mom and I appreciate it very much.  May God bless you both greatly.

I am also experiencing hair loss and taking Biotin does help.  I also went for a haircut yesterday and the salon manager recommended a product called Nioxin.  She said she had a client who was going through chemotherapy and used this and lost very little hair.  I've only been using for two days so I can't really say that it's working for me just yet but I thought it was worth a try.  It wasn't cheap though; regular price was $40 for the 3 step system and I got it on deal for $27.

Good luck!
