Pre-op diet

Hello everyone.
I just started the pre-op diet of protein shakes and sugar-free pudding, applesauce, jello, and oatmeal. I am feeling a little tired, and have horrible diarrhea. Is this normal?  I have lost 5 lbs in 2 days. Any hep/suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.

Hey there! welcome to our group.
It sounds like you must be feeling miserable right now with all those scoots going on. I am wondering if you do not have a touch of the flu or something going on in the background. Usually the protein will cause consitpation if anything. Or maybe you do not agree with the artifical sweetners in the sugar free products? Really sounds flu like to me though...
Have you used sugar free products in the past successfully? if so, that wouldn't be the cause.
I would definately cut out the applesauce right now, as that can loosen the stools and it sounds like you are already having too much of that going on. If it keeps up, I would suggest placing a call to your surgeons office and asking them about this.
Hope it resolves very quickly! Good luc****ep us posted!

Hi and thanks for responding.
Definitely not the flu, its from the shakes.
I have been drinking them, but now 4 per day is a lot.
I'm hoping it corrects itself soon.
I've been eating more yogurt than applesauce.
I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem though.

Patrece has a good point; you may have slight case of the flu.  I did have diarrhea during the two week liquid pre-op diet.  I think we all react physically different at times.  I would be surprised if you weren't losing a lot of weight at this point; you are making a big adjustment in the way you eat.  As always, if you are very concerned about anything you should contact your doctor.

Good luck!

RNY on 02/09/10 with
I just came out of the liquid diet phase yesterday, and I never had those issues; I wasn't allowed applesauce either though, and as others have mentioned that can cause the issues you're having, especially if you're relying on that a lot.  I did a lot of SF puddings, jello, and cream of chicken soup (strained, of course) and never had stomach issues.

I hope you're not ill, but figure out quickly if you are or not as it can affect whether or not the surgeon will do the surgery.  I hope it's just your body adjusting to the new diet, but if you're sick then do whatever you need to quickly to shake it off.  Are you running a temp?

Best of luck to you, let us know how you make out!

I don't know why people keep thinking I might be ill. I am not sick.
I only ate applesauce once, eat mostly pudding and yogurt.
Did you feel weak on this diet?
I have lost 10 lbs already, and i started the diet Tues.
Did you have your surgery yet?
Thanks for the input.

Hi Barbara, welcome to the group.  I had moments of weakness on the liquid diet.  But for the most part, I was just so ready to have the surgery that I kept busy to not think of food.  I had my RNY almost 6 months ago.  The liquid diet does get the weight loss jump started.  Congrats on the successful losing on your pre op diet.  You can get through this.

What day is your surgery secheduled for.  Is there anything in particular I can help you with?  Be sure to pack lip balm and a pillow to use for protecting incisions on the way home.

Hugs

I didn't go on a pre-op diet but did go on a post-op liquid diet. I experienced terrible diarrhea from day 1 and I still get it. It was a bit less last week when I stopped drinking the protein shakes (I was getting sick of them) but then hunger set in, so I'm back on the shakes again.
Yoghurt can cause diarrhea too if you are not used to it, or if you are even slightly lactose intolerant.
And don't forget: if almost all that is going in are liquids, then all that will come out are liquids too!

Best of luck!

Hello and thanks everyone.
I honestly think the scoots are from all the protein shakes.
I guess I just have to get used to them.
My surgery is mar 9, so its not that much longer.
If anyone jhas anysuggestions or hints feel free to reply.
