I just found out that I was approved for surgery.. but...
The hospital/surgeons office initally told me I would not have to pay upfront that they would run everything through my insurance company.. Now they are telling me that I have to pay upfront.

The problem is that I have all my extra funds going into a medical spending account that is only accessible with a EOB from my insurance co....

I am really frustrated/excited/scared.. u name it.. I am waiting for my pre-surgical visit with my surgeon and hopefully we can work something out.

Hang in there. It is so hard before hand trying to get everything done and lined up. I would think that the Dr's office would understand about the medical spending account.
I'd tell them your dilemma. Be your own advocate.
Those mixed feelings are so normal-excited to scared then back again.
Keep us updated.
Blessings~

Congrats on your approval! I am so happy you finally got it. As far as the surgeons office goes, maybe you should remind them of what they told you before, and let them know that you put the money aside in the medical account, counting on them doing it as you were initially tokld they would and would they PLEASE consider honoring thier first arrangement with you.
Good luck and please keep us posted!

I have Med Mutual too and I had no problems with it.  Maybe you're on a different version of their plan...?  Talk to Heather, she's usually pretty knowledgeable about these things.  I can't believe they can't work out some sort of compromise for your situation.  And make sure they're aware of that stipulation too.

Let us know how it works out.  Best of luck to you!

A similar thing happened to me... when the scheduler told me my surgery date was Jan 25th and they told me the surgeon had to be paid in full two weeks prior and the amount would be $955, I did start crying...We didn't have that money available and no one had mentioned anything prior to that day about the bill needing to be paid in advance.  I thought that was really cruel.  While driving home, crying from my disappointment, suddenly my husband remembered about the medical spending acct and I couldn't believe I hadn't thought of that.  The business office had figured out what my portion would be after my deductible and the insurance and it was $955.  They used my benefits card and it went through.

An update, I got my insurance statement yesterday and they paid the surgeon in full.  They have to refund me the $955 I paid.  (Good thing cause they didn't pay the hospital bill in full so it will be needed there.)

Sounds like you don't have a benefits card, your flex spending is by receipt only?  I would contact the administrator of your plan and ask what they would accept to pay this bill in advance of the surgery since the doctor requires it.  It is your money, you are saving for just this type of expense and they should be able to work something out.
