exercising and gaining weight

i started execering about a week ago. instead of the scale going down it has only gone up. i thought exercise was supposed to help lose weight not gain it. i am so confused can anyone exsplaine this to me.

You didn't say how much weight you had gained.  Muscle weighs more than fat so it would make sense that if you are building muscle you would gain weight, but as it's only been a week, I'm not sure you could build enough muscle in that short a period of time.

My best guess is that you have just hit a plateau that happened to coincide with starting your exercise program.  Don't give; take your measurements and stay off the scale for a couple of weeks and see what happens.

thanks for that imput i have gained about 3-5lbs i know thats not alot but i am hoping it will eventully come off

apryldee, you have probably started retaining fluid or hit a plateau just like was said before. keep on keeping on and you should be great. hang in there. vick

You got the best answers, hang in there. Try increasing fluids to help you body lose the fluid retention, flushes toxins out of your body too.

Like Kathy & Vickie said, hang in there, don't quit exercising, increase fluids and stay off the scale for a while (that's the hardest one isn't it!). Sometimes we let those dang scales rule our whole lives. Great when it's going down, but not when going up or staying the same. It will go down again, just keep doing what you are doing, sounds like you've been doing great!
