So Thirsty!

I had Roux n y Surgery 3 weeks ago. I am so thirsty! I can not seem to quinch my thirst. I am drinking plenty of water but my mouth always seems so dry. The issue with this is that I don't want to fill up my pouch and when I drink cold drinks ( because I think this will help) it hurts! I know this is probably a lost cause, but any advice?

just keep sipping all the time. the water is going to run through your stomach if u do it this way. you need between 64-80g of liquid at first and then 1/2 of your weight later on (if you weigh 240 pounds you will need to drink 120 g of liquid).  it is very important that you don't get dehydrated. use protein powder in water and this counts towards your liquid. i had to chew a lot of sugar free gum at first. i still do after i eat since i can't drink for 30-45 minutes. good luck to you. vick

Thanks Vickie O,

I might have to try the gum thing. I did find some Sugar Free IceBreakers that we really good that seem to help a little but I want to "chug" something cold! LOL I'll just keep sippin' away!!

Thanks Again!
Wish I would have known it was all in my head to begin with!

I went through boxes of sugarfree popsicles, still do.  I find that I can consume more room temp fluids than iced.  Try a variety of temperatures of your fluids to see what your pouch likes best and go ahead and sip frequently.

Welcome to our growing family.  Hugs, congrats on getting to the losing side of surgery.  Kathy

Thanks so much Kathy. Yeah, Cold is not working for me at all. I am able to get it down but it hurts afterwards! I do have popcicles but it's had to keep them away from my 3 kids! LOL

Before surgery I could down large volumes of ice cold water, my pouch does not tolerate the volume in cold.  I do find that cool to room temp liquids work best for me.  Ask me this a year ago and I would have been headed for the iced water too.  Listen to your pouch and do what is necessary.  I am now 5.5 months out from my RNY and still getting adjusted to some things (lots of things).....

Today I went to the store and bought some FIJI water, it seems to be kicking the thirst and it's a water that I can tolertate at room temp.
Today I statrted my puree diet so this will help a little. I will be getting a little more texture and not the powdery stuff from the Protein Shakes. I think things are starting to look up!!

Thanks Again!
