Open RNY
Ok, so I was informed last week I will be having an open procedure, and I would like to have some info on it...
Did anyone else have Open? Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Meanwhile, good morning everyone! Hope you all are doing just dandy so far today. The weather here is still cold, but the rain yesterday melted 90 percent of the snow we had. The temps will be getting back to normal around Thursday, according to the weather channel.
The shoulder is killing me with all this cold we are having. I am considering making an earlier appointment with my orthopedic doctor just to make sure everything is ok. I didnt have this much trouble with the other shoulder.
Well, I am off to do some chores around the house, and will be back later on to do some reading, and catch up on all the goodies yall have posted.

hey girl, i had open rny. i have a huge scar from my plastics, but the one from my rny was about 6 inches long at the top of my scar i have now. look on the photos of my post plastics surgery and u can get an idea of what my scar looks like. but i have seen other people who don't scar as bad as i did. my skin has been stretched dfor so long is the reason i think. also i got a hernia about 2-3 months out so be very careful for 6-12 months. i picked up a cinderblock and put it on the porch. and that was all she wrote. they had to do mine that way because of my size i think. it hurt quite a bit for about 1 to 1 1/2 weeks. good luck. vick

Mine was lap, but I have looked at scars from those who have had open procedures. The same amount of incision, just 1 incision vs several small ones. If my only choice was to have the open incision, I would still have said yes, bring on the surgery. You will take a bit longer to recover, they have great pain meds. I am here for you, you will get other responses. You have been waiting so long for the date to finally arrive, yeeehawww, you have a date. I'm so glad for you.
I get varying amounts of aches and pains in several places dependent on the weather situation. You have your own personal weather indicator in these aches and pains.

Hurray Linda! You finally got your date!
I had open RNY. That was my choice. For whatever reason, there is a slightly higher percentage of weight loss vs laproscopic although the gap is closing as they perfect this surgery. But I decided if I was going to do this that I wanted the best possible outcome so I went for that extra 3 or 4%. I also didn't like the idea of being operated on via video. I read an article that said there is also a greater chance that an organ can get nicked during laproscopic. I would choose open again in a heartbeat. The incision is uncomfortable but they also don't have to pump you full of air so I guess that's kind of a trade off.
I'm so excited for you! You have been waiting so long.

Linda,
I'm happy for you that you are getting so close finally. My RNY was lap, but all the info given to me by doc before hand indicated that to them, the only difference was the slightly longer healing time and slightly greater chance of hernias after the open procedure. Everything else they considered the same. Good luck and we know you'll be fine, and on the road to WL in no time!

I had open RNY 3 weeks ago. For the first week is was a little uncomfortable. Other then that it was no biggie. I have a pic up of my staples where they made the incision. My surgeon prefers to do open because they get a better view of the intestines and also you have less of a chance of internal hernias as you do with lap, but more of a chance of wall hernias with open. I think as far as scaring goes mine is already fading pretty good, I think it is just how your body heals.
I wish we could get some rain to melt our snow instead we are having another snow storm tonight. I am so ready for Spring.

Thank you all so much for the info you have given me. This helps me to understand the open part more. Thanks again,
