Gas Question

Ok I was reading some of the posts about a gassy issue.  Is this common with RNY surgery? Does it happen to everyone.  I'm thinking this may be a huge reason for me not to have the surgery.  I did see that there is a OTC pill to take but does the gas last forever?

Hi Lucy,

Yes, for me there is an increase in the gas, not enough that I wish I did not have the surgery.  I do use the OTC pill to reduce the odor and even my hubby notices that the odor is resolved.  It, the gas, seemed to last for a bit and now at 5 months out, so much better.  I would have the surgery (RNY) in a heartbeat.

You should be getting answers from others too.  I don't know how common the increased gas is, may also be related to types of food/fiber used.  Read as much as you can.

yes i have more gas now but not as much as i had at first (i am over a year out).  the gas i do have isn't real stinky now, thank heavens.  i  knew going in that this would be a problem, but my health was a risk and i didn't feel like i had a choice. good luck to you. vick

I too have gas sometimes.  Not as bad as it was at first.  I am 8 mos. out.   Would have the surgery all over again.  I am off all of my medicines.  doing great.   Everyone has the gas problem.  Good luck.

I actually have not had the gas problem described here.  It (burping and farting. to be specific) seems to be about the same as it always was.  I am able to be "discreet".

I'm down 120 pounds - thanks to RNY!  Working on the next 25.  Then I'll tackle more...
