I made it to the other side!

I made it through surgery Friday and I came home yesterday. I'm pretty sore but the pain has been much less than I imagined it would be. My main problem was extreme nausea the first 24 hours. I had my gallbladder removed at the same time as my RNY so I don't know if that contributed to the problem. It seemed to get worse if I used the morphine pump, so I barely used it. Something happened that DID terrify me, but it turned out okay- I threw up ruby red blood and just knew something was wrong and they'd have to go back in to fix it. My nurse (who had not seen this before) called my doctor at 3 am. The doctor was not worried (very comforting) and said it was probably residual blood left in the stomach that most people pass thru their bowels but a few throw it up instead. So when I did it again  2 hours later, I wasn't nearly as upset. After that, I only had dry heaves  a few times. But by Sunday morning, all that was gone. They gave me Boost and I kept it down fine although I can't handle much at a time. Thanklfully, plain water doesn't bother me either, I'm actually very thirsty and just have to be careful to sip, sip.sip. So anyway - slip over losers and make room for one more!! Thanks to all of you for your prayers and support!

Hugs,
Rhonda

As someone who goes in tomorrow, I appreciate your post!  Now if I have some of the same issues I won't be so freaked out.

I'm glad to hear you're doing well - and make sure you leave a little extra room for me on that loser's bench!

Best of luck to you as you continue your recovery - keep us posted!

Welcome Rhonda.  I am 19 days post op.  I also had the RYN.  I had a lot of pain from my surgery but am doing much better now.  I have residual back pain but everyone tells me this is normal.  Take it slow as far as the water and protein drink.  Vomiting is not good, as I'm sure you know.  Did your doctor give you prilosec to take every morning?  Mine did and it helps with the nausea.  If you have to take medications, like me, take them one at a time and space them out over time.

Stay in touch

Hi Marybeth. My doctor put me on Nexium, a capsule he said to open up and take in applesauce or something similar. I haven't taken one yet but hope to start tomorrow. The radiologist who did my swallow test said I was showing some reflux and that was probably contributing to my nausea. Having to drink that horrible stuff for the swallow test was no picnic for sure, but I survivied it and without throwing up the stuff. Everyone was super nice and supportive.

Glad your doc got you something.  I have had to take that test in the past - not fun I agree.  Hang in there it gets better.

((((((Rhonda))))))  come join me on this losing bench.  Never thought it would be so great to be among losers.  but it is grand.  Sorry that you had the emesis, take things easy at home.  I tried to do more than I should have as far as distance walking after surgery.  Slow learner in some matters.  Take your meds as directed, sip, sip, sip and walk several short walks a day.  Soooo glad that there are no splinters on this never ending bench.  I don't relish trying to pick them out of my tush.
