Hi, I was wondering if anyone has or had the IVC filter during or after surgery?

Hi Amy, I did not need an IVC filter, but have heard from others that have needed to have one.  Prevents clotting problems and helps make surgery as safe as possible.  Are you needing to have one?

Yes i believe so, my surgeon really wants anyone with a bmi over 50 to have them just for safety.

I had one put in the morning of my surgery and I'm actually having it taken out tomorrow morning (4+ months later).  My surgeon required it because my BMI at the time of my surgery hovered around 60.

I was given a sedative prior to the procedure and then a local anesthetic during the procedure.  I do remember a burning pain when the local was given, but I do not recall any other pain as it was being done and it was fairly quick - 10 to 15 minutes.  All of the pain that I felt later was related to my RNY surgery.

I know I will be given a sedative prior to the procedure tomorrow too, and I will go home shortly after it's completed, but I don't know if there will be restrictions that I will need to follow.  I'll find out tomorrow!

I hope this helps!  Take care!
