pouch ? how much yogurt...

Ok, so I am really wondering about my pouch. I just don't understand much...I had asked my dr about how much I can eat and I didn't get a definite answer. I am 5 1/2 months out and eating about 3 oz per meal. One thing that he told me is that I need to be careful with soups because I could eat an endless amount of it and have quite a few calories and get in trouble (since it just flows through). I had also asked about stretching my pouch out...he told me it's more like the opening stretches and things flow through faster.

So my question...today I had a yogurt (80 cal, 1.5 g fat, 4 carbs and 12 protein) this was a 6 oz yogurt. I ate the whole thing for breakfast.  Is that too much? I don't feel bad, just feel satisfied.

I think that I am becoming a worry wart about it...but I have only lost 2 lbs in 2 weeks and it's really bothering me. I am going to journal my food today to see where I am in calories but I just worry that I am eating too much or not enough (since I feel hungry alot).

thanks in advance for your help

Susan, the food log sounds like a great idea, keep track for a few days and run the list by your nutritionist.  I am just a few weeks behind you and can also eat the 80 ca. container of yogurt.  I add a few sunflower seeds to give me something to chew on with the yogurt and make the meal last a little longer.  I feel satisfied too.  Continue to do your best to keep up on the protein intake and fluids.  Here sharing your concerns.  Hugs, Kathy

at about 5-6 months, i had to increase my food intake. i was in starvation mode, so i wasn't losing weight. my body was hanging on to all the fat thinking that i was starving to death. when i increased my food intact, i became satisfied and started losing weight. run it by your nut. logging will help you know exactly what you are eating so you can tell her.  good luck. vick

Vickie,

Thank you so much for the idea. I will call my NUT today. I am so glad that you mentioned it because I forgot that I can call her to ask questions. Thanks again and I will be logging today!

I agree with everyone else - definitely keep a log and see how many calories, carbs, etc. that you are getting. It may be that you aren't getting nearly enough now. And if you are feeling hungry, you probably need more protein - maybe with added fat if your pouch can handle that.  And congratulations to you!!! You have lost so much in 5 1/2 months. Be proud of how far you have come. You will make it to goal, just hang in there and celebrate your great success so far. Try not to worry so much and instead think about all the things you are able to do now that you couldn't do before your surgery! Take pictures and measurements and compare them to your "befores". Often, we don't see ourselves the way others see us, and we don't realize how far we've come and how different  we are. Take time to really "see" the changes in yourself and be proud!! You are doing great!

Rhonda,

Good suggestion on the pictures. It has been a while since I have had any taken.  Yes, I do have a problem with the way I see myself. I sometimes try to judge how I look in comparison to others but I know it would be better for me to just do the pictures and measurements.  Thank you so much for your support and I wish you the best with your wls journey!

Susan

Hi Susan! The basic rule of thumb for an RNY patient is this:
At first 1 oz of food per sitting.
At about 3 months you should be up t 2 oz and at 6 months you should be at 3 to 4 oz.
At 9 months at 6 oz and at a year, 6 oz (or one cup).
Sounds like you are right on target! As far as the slowing in weight loss, unfortunately that is very normal. At around 3 months loss slows to about 1/2 of what it was the first 3 months.  Now even tho your yogurt is probably more than 3 to 4 oz, you have to remember it is not a solid, so when we are not eating a solid, we do tend to fit more into our pouches. This is okay, as long as we do not get carried away. You are fine with the cup of yogurt. One important thing to do here is this: take 20 minutes to eat, as this is how long it takes the tummy to tell the brain it is satisfied. This can be hard to do, I know.. but is really important to keep us from overinduldging.

You are doing awesome. And the slowing in loss is normal. To ensure you are losing the max you can, be sure you are getting in ALL the protein you should, All the meals you should, vitamins, water and exercise. If all of this is in order, you are on the right track.
