I'm sorry they didn't react the way you were expecting.  Remember that you believe in you and this is a decision you made for yourself. It's a bumpy road and you'll have lot's of ups and downs.  I am about a month away from my surgery and I still haven't told my extended family, mostly because I don't want to hear their negativity.

I wish i had words of wisdom but best of luck!

Susan,
It sounds like you have done your research, you know this is not a magic cure, and you believe that this is the answer for you. Arm yourself with the reasons you want to do WLS, the facts about the outcome, and get answers from your doctor about the expected results. Have you decided on what surgery is best for you? That is probably your biggest goal right now. Once you know which one will work best for you, you can do all the research for that surgery and have lots of info to share with loved ones who are concerned. In the end, it is your body and your decision. I wish you all the best on your journey.

Unfortunately that is one of the hard parts about sharing your decision. you don't always get the response you hope for. But truly...hang in there. They will come around. The problem is that it seems the horror stories are all people hear about and remember. They don't realize that it is less than 1% of surgical patients that have a bad time of it. they worry for you. Let them know you appreciate their concern, but that you must do this for you and it isn't open for debate. They'll come around.
People have a hard time understanding things that they don't feel is right for them. If it isn't right for them, how could it be for you?  They just don't understand, but in time they will.
Hugs!

Susan, know that you made the decision, did the research and know what is best for you.  Set boundaries of acceptable responses from family members.  You know your family and they surprised you with their responses.  Hang in there, fear makes people say things they they hadn't meant to say.  I am glad you came to share and vent.

personally,

i decided not to tell anyone, i mean i told my mommy cuz she is my support system, but there are always going to be those who don't understand or wonder why you need surgery and you just can't do it yourself.  It's too hard to get into and explain especially when they cannot understand.

Like others said, remember u r doing this for you and your overall health, no one else.  Remember we are now your family too, but the side of the family who you know will understand and never judge.
