How soon is to soon ...

OK got a question on my mind .. I so bad don't want my RNY to fail, I want to lose the weight and be a healthier person. OK here is the question how soon is to soon to add pureed food to my diet? My doctor (and his paperwork) said 48 hours after being released from the hospital. Well I tried that and 1 got so sick it hurt, and 2 was told by my support that it was way to soon for pureed food. I am now 12 days post op and was wondering if it is to soon to start adding pureed foods to my diet?

I have tried some pureed foods even though I still don't feel hungry.  But I'm not sure if the timing is right for food, should I wait longer? Or is it time?

My doctor says after 2 weeks food is fine, but all doctors vary. I am having surgery on Monday and I keep thinking as soon I try food its going to hurt, but lets hope not. If you feel comfortable trying it then do it. Good luck and remember small bites and chew chew chew!

Good luck Monday, I'll be thinking of you, and looking for your posts

as far as eating, I was scared out of my mind to try anything too, I thought it would hurt too. Now that the swelling has gone down and I can handle the food, its not that bad. I read where people got chicken stuck and I'm so scared to eat my favorite food (when I am ready for real food) But it is something I am gonna have to try.

My friend (and support buddies, past bypass patients) tell me I should wait 4 weeks to eat, but I don't know what is right. Like you said every doctor is different, I'm still so scared that I am going to do something to ruin my RNY or hurt myself, or stretch my pouch out. I'm sure the little tablespoons i am eating is not hurting anything at all. But there is the thought in the back of my head still.

Awe thanks!! I plan on posting as soon as I am able!!

Well the way I see it the more you worry the better you are going to do!! People who don't worry I think have a less chance of success. I see that most people start their pureed 2 weeks after surgery. As long as you are not in pain you must be doing something right!!

Hi Melissa, yes, try pureed things, take it easy, a bite or two, high protein if possible.  I started out with yogurt and refried beans.  Slowly increase to foods that need more chewing, again high protein.  If something feels bad, wait and try it again at another time.  Supplement with protein shakes as needed and get in your fluids.

melissa, if you are hurting when your doc says to do something, you need to call him and let him know.  he or she would want to know. especially if he thinks you are doing pureed at 2 days and your are 12 days out and you still aren't.  please call your doc. we can only offer support here, your doctor and nut are the experts.  take care. vick

You have gotten good words of wisdom here. If your doc said it is okay, try it, but only introduce one new food at a time, so if something does not sit well, you are able to define which food it is. Most all RNY patients start pureed by 2 weeks, but not all. My doc had me eating scrambled eggs the morning after my surgery. So they all have very different requirements indeed. Make sure any pureed foods you d try are very low in fat, sugar and other carb content, as these are the things that will make you dump and you will feel awful!
Good luck as you begin to experiment! Keep us posted!

Celia!!!!!!!! Can't wait to welcome you to the loses bench! check in when you can and let us know how you are after surgery. GO GIRL!!!!!!!!
