what to have for 1st week post-op
I am getting down to the last couple days before my surgery- ahhh!! And I am starting to freak out a little bit, I just want to make sure I have things ready at home for next week. So I already have many different kinds of protein shakes/powders, broths, crystal light mixes, liquid tylenol- what else do I need? The one thing I wish I owned is a recliner- so many people say that is the only place they can sleep for awhile and since I am a side sleeper it will be rough. thanks everyone for all your help and support!
Liz, so glad that your surgery is soon. The waiting seems forever, in hindsight, flies by.
Sounds like you have the basics. In lack of a recliner, use pillows to prop yourself up if needed. I was able to sleep in my bed with pillows for support. I sleep a lot on my abdomen, took a few weeks before that was tolerable. You will be fine.
Do you have your vitamins and supplements. If you need to crush any meds, a pill crusher helps. Mix any that taste bad with sugarfree jelly to mask the taste. I wish I knew about masking the taste of nasty meds right away after surgery. Best wishes for a speedy recovery after surgery. Hugs, Kathy

Some folks rent a recliner for the first month. I didn't find this necessary, but I too had many pillows on my bed to help with repositioning and getting the pressure off that tailbone. My bed looked like a recliner by the time I was done adding pillows!
Have Sugar Free popsicles for sure. When i was first home i could not drink plain water without being nauseated. SF popsicles saved me, and I found it was very pleasant thing to have all that flavor and get some chewing in too. Bring your cup from the hospital home, so you can track you liquid intake a bit easier. Shoot for64 oz per day.
Plan to rest and relax as needed. It may also help to have smething easy to slip on your feet so you can take small frequent walks. This helps prevent clots and help to move the air out of your abdominal cavity.
Good luck, and I can't wait to welcome you to the losers bench!

I just bought more SF popsicles last night along with soups that I can strain and just have the broth then. And I will push myself to walk at the hospital and at home, I am not looking forward to the gas pains that everyone has told me about!! Thanks Patrece, I can't wait to be on the losers bench too!
