Feeding Family?

Okay Veterans- during those first few weeks after surgery how did you deal with preparing food for family? I guess this is mostly a question to the female buddies, although some of you males might be the family cook also. Were you able to cook during that time, or did the smells and sight of the foods make you run and hide? I'm trying to think it thru to be prepared for how things will go during those first few weeks. Thanks in advance for your answers and advice!

Hi Rhonda, I was able to cook after the first week or so.  No appetite to speak of.  I would prepare meals and freeze for the family, you will be tired during the first weeks after surgery and anything that can make your life easy will be a relief.  I had the hardest time during the pre-op liquid diet time.  Told my hubby that he was a "bachelor" in the cooking dept until I could eat after surgery.  He took that to heart, fast food, brats, frozen meals.

Thanks, Kathy. My pre-op diet will be 2 weeks of Atkins style eating, so no problem there. I'll just eat the meat and veggies and skip any rice, potatoes, or pasta that I might prepare for the family. They'll probably be eating a lot of fast food, hot dogs, and sandwiches afterwards. My dd is 20 and can cook some things, but she's going to school and has a lot of homework. It'll all work out i'm sure.

You know, I can't quite imagine being able to eat a couple of teaspoons of food and being stuffed! It is just a completly amazing concept! I can't wait to experience it.

My hubby would get in the kitchen cooking and  for the first week or so, I would go to my bedroom and put my C-pap  on so i couldn't smell it.  Would take it off when he was through.
Good luck and take care of yourself.

Thanks Annie. How's the 5 day pouch test going? Or has it been more than 5 days already? I keep losing track of time!

rhonda, boy smell was a killer for me.  i was sick at first so i wound up staying in wichita falls, away from my hubby, for about 2 weeks.  but the smell of the air spray they used in the house i stayed in i was terrible sensitive to. wanted to vomit.  i would let him cook for himself and just go to your room. then spray the air real good with oust, or some spray without a heavy sent.  lysol would be toooooo much for me back then i think. good luck, rhonda. vick

I tried to outsmart myself when coking for Paul right after surgery. I focused on cooking the things for him that I knew he liked but I did not like. That made it a breeze! I really wasn't hungry anyhow. If a smell did get to me, I just made sure I was going to be eating with him anyhow, and had whatever I was eating pretty close to ready before i cooked his. The first week, I avoided the table at meal time.
