YOU CAN DO IT, LIZ!

I began a pureed diet two days following my surgery - while still in the hospital.  Seems every surgeon is different though.

I actually wasn't hungry for several weeks after surgery, but ate when I was supposed to so that I wouldn't become extremely malnourished.

I began a soft food diet four weeks following my surgery.  This varies greatly by surgeon too.

Keep your eye on the PRIZE and continuously tell yourself that you CAN and WILL do this!

Hi Liz, chew on sugar free popsicles when the urge to chew strikes, they are allowed during the pro-op diet.  you will get through this.  Start each day, hour, minute, etc telling yourself " I can do anything I need to to get ready for this surgery"  Positive mental space helps.  Use the time wisely, get yourself in the best possible spot for succeeding.

I gradually added foods, the only things I really had trouble with was meats that I did not chew well enough.  Try new things in small amounts and just chew till they are mush.  You will eat again, smaller portions, enjoy the flavors, let things roll around in your mouth for maximum flavor and texture.

liz, like kim said, you probably won't be hungry for a couple of weeks after surgery.  i know i wasn't  i had some trouble with chicken and thick pork, but i don't think i had them moist enough and chewed good enough. moist meat is very important. i can't remember when i started pureed. my doc more or less put me on taco meat about 2 weeks out.  loved it. refried beans i remember after a week.  he was pretty agressive about getting you into regular food.  you can do this.  just keep your mind on the prize. good luck to you. vick

Liz,

Also watch re-heated foods, especially in the microwave as they tend to get dried out and can get "stuck".

I also agree that I wasn't hungry for a few weeks after surgery.

I did the sugar free ice pops as well.

We have the same date!! I know what you mean the liquid diet thing stresses a person out, but just keep with it. Actually my surgeon said that we can go right to soft food after 2 weeks, but I am doing pureed just because I am worried about not chewing good enough and getting it stuck!! I have my food processor all ready!! Good Luck on Monday will be thinking about you!!
