Hi all,
I know I am still new (6 days post), but am reading about the expected hair loss and wondering if anyone lost a small amount/ lesser amount  of hair loss- or general hair loss experiences.

If you did, what do you think that you did different? Or, is it something that we all go through, just defferent degrees of hair loss,

thanks buddies, I love posting on here, it's mean out on the main forum, lol

I am almost 4 months out and am losing just a few strands here and there.  I was experiencing some hair loss about a year ago and my PCP recommended Biotin.  Within 2 weeks of taking the Biotin, my quit falling out.

I have been taking it daily ever since and as soon as I noticed I was starting to get a handful of hairs in the shower, I upped the dosage.  I take 4000mcg a day and could still increase it if necessary.  I know it is available in either 1000 or 7500mcg tabs and it's pretty inexpensive.

Good luck!

Colleen

my hair started falling out at about 3 months out from my bypass and was slowing up when i had my tummy tuck and hernia repair in august. it is falling out a lot now.  i keep it cut short so it is not that noticible, but i just hate it.  maybe i should try some biotin. good luck to you. vick

Hi Becky, hair is primarily protein, when your system goin through a shock state, the protein need is increased, the anesthesia may affect the hair.  Several reasons for hair loss.  We all go through the loss at some point after surgery.  I was shocked by the small hairballs I found on the shower floor when mine started.  Now added biotin to my supplement list.  There is less hair falling out.

So glad you come here to bariatric buddy group, we offer positive support.  Sometimes the main board gets mean and feisty.  I pick and choose among posts to read if I venture out there.  I do admit that I spend a great amount of my OH time here with the group.

Hi Becky.. I have experience very minimal hair loss. I focused on the protein, and am sure that helped. I think some of it may depend on the health of your hair prior to surgery. But much of it is the protein factor. Biotin is safe for us and does help for sure. Even if you do lose hair, it typically comes back in after about 6 ot 8 months out from wls.
Good luck!

As soon as I heard about the hair loss issue I talked to my daughter, who also happens to be a hair dresser. She told me about the biotin, which I have been taking for about 3 months now.  She also told me about a shampoo line called Nioxin.  It's a little pricey, but if this is truly an issue for you it may be worth the expense.  Good luck!
