OK so I need help, is this normal

I am now 5 days post op and I don't feel hungry, although I eat when I should. I don't feel full  when I do eat, but I only eat 2 tablespoons of each thing I eat. Such as dinner, I ate 2 tablespoons of baby food chicken (YUCK)  and 2 tablespoons of sugar free applesauce, and 2 tablespoons of mashed potatoes. And I stopped, didn't feel hungry and didn't feel full, however it wasn't but 5 mins after I ate i was in the bathroom. Is this normal, this early out?

also the past few days I have been running a fever, I assumed i got the flu when i got home, it was followed by a wonderful cough and wheezing. the hubby was sick a few days before my surgery, but I had no signs of it. Today my temp got as high as 101.1 the paper said call at 101.5 or higher, so I ended up putting on shorts and a tank top, taking children liquid Tylenol (cold) and laying in the middle of the bed for a while.

I dont know if I am doing anything right, or if i am doing it all wrong, i am nervous as can be, and dont know what to do.

I know Im not getting enough fluids in, although I am pushing today so far I have had, 8oz water, about 4 oz diet tea, 2 frozen fruit pops, and a 4 oz protien shake, Im thinking of going to grab another frozen fruit pop, and bottle of water.

please give me advise and a push in the right direction, Im lost, and dont know what to do at this point in my new life

Hi Melissa

You really should call your doctor.  Some of what you are going through as far as eating etc., is normal after surgery.  As for the fever 4/10 of degree wouldn't have kept me from calling, especially since your husband was sick just prior to your surgery.

Better safe than sorry; I hope you are feeling better soon.

i had a lot of troubles with the runs and throwing up for a few months.  be sure and watch that fever very closely, that is important. try to get in more liquids, you can't afford to get dehydrated, none of us can.  you should be drinking (water, decaf, diet tea,, popcycles, protein drink made with water, broth, any clear type of fluid.)  don't drink caffinated tea or coffee, it can actually cause dehydration.  just keep asking questions and do what your doc says.  fluids are the main thing right now.  i would call my doc and tell him you are getting the flu and the runs.  hang in there and good luck to ya. vick

Melissa, call your surgeon or ER.  The elevated temp makes your fluid needs even greater.  You do not want to risk anything.  They are available for you.

I agree with the others. Please do not ignore the fever, it could be a flue or cold, but can also be a sign of another infection, and you are already at high risk for dehydration and the increased temp only worsens this risk.

The appetite part is nomal.. Please post on this again after the fever is addressed...but for now, talk to your doc or hit the ER please!

Talked to the doctor today, after a few other concerns. he said no need to go to the hospital, I am just dehydrated. Need to keep sipping on water. Or eating sugar free pop cycle's. I'm trying so hard to get enough fluids in, I just don't know how to do it. Feels like i always have to have the bottle or cup by my mouth, isn't that how I got here in the first place always having food in my mouth? I'm trying I know it takes time. I'm trying to get the hang of it.

Remember, the fluids are very imprtant for sure, but no...it is not the water that gets us to the point of opting to have this surgery, its the stuff that was so bad for us that did.  I know it is very hard early on to get the liquids in, but it does get easier. Sugar Free popsicles help alot. Hang in there. I have no doubt you are trying, and frustrated too I am sure, you are gona get the hang of all of this. Its a lot to adjust to!
Let me know if there is a way I can help you get your footing with all the changes.
