Exams and more exams!
What a crazy week! I've been in and out of doctors and labs all week getting just about everything tested... blood. urine, lungs, liver, pancreas, even bladder and uterus! For a slow moving, pain-ridden woman, it has been a nightmare. The good news is, I'm in perfect health (other than the MS of course) and ready to tackle surgery!
Insurance has been contacted, all the documents have been submitted and I should be notified of when to report for committee review within the next couple of weeks.
I even ordered an electronic scale (my old one was bust) and a blender (never had one) in preparation for post-surgery. I've been surfing the net for proteins, but there are few available locally and some that sound really yummy in the US. I wonder if they would consider shipping internationally?
I had not really given much thought of what I would need after the actual surgery before finding this website. Since I'm getting the Gastric Sleeve, my doc had said that after the first few weeks I'd be eating normally, only in much smaller quantities. Now I see that I will probably need a lot of supplements to remain healthy.
Anyhow, I just wanted to give you a report on why I have not been here much.

Sounds like the head to toe exam went well. Anticipating a surgery date for you will be here soon too. Preplanning is great. Get the things you will need. Plan to pack lightly to go to the hospital. Lip balm is top of the list for packing. Take care of yourself in the meantime. One day at a time. Before you know it, the weight that limits some of the movement will start to melt away.
Thanks for the update Amalia. Hugs, Kathy

Amalia...with all of those exams, you should have gotten a degree from all of this huh? LOL. I am so happy to hear they turned out well.
My advice is to contact the protein company and ask about international shipping. they may request that you order a larger quantity at once, but I'll bet some of them would ship to you. You may even ask your local health food store if they would consider trying to order in one you are interested in.
Your doc is right in that your food choices are not nearly as restricted as with RNY. But I do believe, from what I studied the governing body on wls does advise supplementation due to the small volume of food you will be taking in, but usually after a couple of years you can eat enough to stop supplementing. BUT it sure doesn't hurt to take your vitamins.
I have been wondering where you disappeared to. thanks for updating us.
good luck with the last few things you have left to do in your approval process.

Patrece, if you calculate in all the studying I've been doing in OH and other relevant sites re WLS, I think I deserve at least a Masters! LOL
I'm certain I will need vitamins, I take them for MS anyway. It was the proteins I wondered most about since my doc had never mentioned them. I tried to get some info from his nurse today, but she would only say that "the doctor will give you a written program"... So, now I have to do what I do worst of all... WAIT!

glad to hear that you are fit as a fiddle. i wonder if you are going to need all the stuff that rny'ers need. rhy'ers have a hard time with absorbtion because part of our small intestines have been removed that helps with absorbtion. ask your doc about this before you invest in all this money. at least i would. good luck to you. vick
EXPERIENCE WITHOUT REFLECTION IS HOLLOW
I probably won't need all the things that you rny'ers need, Vickie. That was one of the reasons I went for the GS. And I'm waaay too cheap (and probably broke after this surgery) to buy expensive and unecessary stuff. It won't kill me to live without protein for a week or two, or however long it will take to stock up on it post-op. I'm only impatient because I want to get on with it already! I feel that every day the operation is delayed is one day lost from my future, healthier life!
I do have to say here that protein is one thing you don't want to skimp on, especially with the MS. Protein is vital to muscle tissue health and if you do not get enough in you will lose a lot of muscle along with the fat, and we don't want you to have any additional challenges. So..if you are not getting in the 60 to 80 grams of protein in your foods, be sure to supplement somehow.
