New here!
Hi everyone! I have my bypass scheduled for Jan 25th- and I am excited yet nervous of any complications, anesthesia, etc. The surgeon thinks I will do well with surgery because I am young and my BMI is lower. However everyone in my family is scaring me to the point that I dont know if I want to do this!!! My husband (who is not really for me having the surgery either) told me he wants me to be happy and healthy but sees that I dont go to the gym much now and thinks I haven't worked out enough to consider the surgery! The rest of my family told me that they have seen me take off the weight before (but it comes back!) and also they dont see why I would put myself through surgery and risks JUST to be thin?!!?!?AHHH.. it drives me nuts.... so any advice? thanks! Liz
you have to do what is best for you. Just remember the surgrey is just a tool, you will have to go by the rules or you will gain all back. I am 6 1/2 mos out, down 74 pounds. would do it all over again.
You have to do it for you. Everyone tried to talk me out of it but they didn't do the job. find you a local support group and go to it. take care.

I agree with Annielou. This isn't about them. It is about you. It isn't their decision, it is yours. Don't allow anyone to stand in judgement of you or sway your decision. Do what is right for you. They do not live life in your shoes.
Do be sure that before you take this step you are dedicated to making the life long changes that will be necessary to your long term success, or as Annielou shared, you will almost certainly regain.
As you lose weight, you will have more energy and stmina for exercise. Some of our group members find exercise is something they now look forward to and enjoy very much.
Thank them (those you are referring to in your post) for their concern in a very nice way, then let them know that this is a personal decision. That you appreciate and will consider their concerns but that you will do what you feel is best for you, and that because they love and care about you, you know you can count on their support. (even if you can't). This might really make them think differently and actually be more supportive, knowing you expect it of them. If they say they do not support you, simply let them know that you are sorry they don't understand, but again, it is your decision and only you will make it. This can all be conveyed in a very gentle way, or you can be very blunt. Only you know what will work best when talking to them.
Be true to you. But be prepared, as this isn't as easy as many think.
Hugs to you! Thanks for joining our group and welcome!

Lost 114 lbs. working on getting rid of a recent 10 lb regain...and WILL succeed!
I agree with all the rest *****sponded. Your body, your needs, your choice. We all have been there with not losing the weight by non-surgical methods. We are here for your support. My hubby was not in favor of my surgery initially, he is supportive now, still learning, but supportive. Reads many posts, ask even more questions here and of your medical team. The helathy part way outweighs (pun intended) the risks, you know what you need to do for your optimum health. Hugs, Kathy

Thank you everyone for your warm welcome and encouragement!! Needless to say I took it very personal when someone said to me that I was doing this JUST to be thin,,,, however they didnt know that I have high cholesterol, blood pressure, pcos, back pain, joint pain, etc.... so this is not for cosmetic reasons! The main reason is so that I can get pregnant and have a healthy pregnancy- and with this extra weight I was told I would have trouble. So the risks really are the things that scares my family- so I am going to talk to the surgeon today to reassure myself and to ask more questions.....because now I too am scared....
thanks!
