Things to have at home after surgery

I was hoping to go out and purchase alot of the things that I will need for liquids/food after surgery.  I will meet with the Dietician/nutrishionist a week before surgery, but I would really like to get most of it bought before then.  Could anyone give me some ideas of what to have at home?  Thank you.

a lot of people use crystal lite to flavor their water. i never liked it.  get some good protein powders, i use syntrax nectar and syntrax medical grade whey isolate.  go to a1supplements.com and you can get a good array and they are cheaper.  a lot will depend on what your doctor wants you to use. call his office and find out what he/she recommends. also have plenty of chap stick or something like it, after surgery your lips chap.  get a good quality.  books, books, books.  do u know how long you will be on a liquid diet and pureed diet?  that will make a difference also. call your doc and find out all these things.  good luck to you. vick

Here's what I did...
I made sure I had a good quality Bariatric vitamin (multi), iron and calcium (I use Building blocks www.bbvitamins.com) I also had a couple of flavors of Unjury protein (medical grade and highly absorbable also affordable...  www.unjury.com ) Then I made sure I had Sugar free popsicles on hand, and thank goodness I did, as water did not sit well. Crystal light was also handy, I mixed my vanilla protein in with orange flavore crystal light and enjoyed the taste. I also had baby spoons and small plates to use. this helps you eat slower and control portions better. Have tylenol on hand to use for pain after you no longer need the prescription pain meds. We cannot use ibuprofen (advil, etc) only acetominophen (tylenol).

Make sure you have lots of pillows available, as you will be on your back for a while and the pressure can get to you. Use the pillows to help cushion you and change pressure points.

If you start out on liquids, have broths, jello(sf) popsicles(sf) and other liquids on hand so you do not have to travel to the store, incase you are not feeling up to it.

Please be sure to take several small walks daily to help prevent clotting and to move the air out of you from surgery, and also sip sip sip as often as you can! You may also want miralax on hand, as that first BM can be difficult and can be 4 or 5 days after surgery.

Good luck to you! Keep us posted! Will be waiting to welcome you to the losers bench!

The others have listed great ideas.  I do not have anything new to add other than sharing your anticipation of the upcoming surgery.  Hugs, Kathy
