New a few questions...

Hello.. my name is stacie and im from the great state of iowa!  I am going in for my surgery on Jan13 and im very nervous anxious and excited all rolled together.

Like everyone i have so many questions and concerns and so on.. I guess it is the going into world of the unknown.....
so i thought what better then to have those of you who have been there help me out....

So im hearing alot about this "dumping"  what exactly is it and what and how does it happen?  what does it feel like and how come it takes place and what is exactly happening.. im very in the dark about this.....

Next of course same as many others ask.... about vitamins and ideas for protein and so on.. i have been reading alot of the discussions on here tho and gotten some great ideas already.

Where can i find the biotine?  been told it is good to take.. and what about calcium?  is this something i need to double up on besides what is to offer in my multivitam?  if so what is better the citrate or carbonate?

How long after my sugery will i have to wait til i can exercise and work out?  and on avg i know a few have said it should be 6 wks to go back to work but for most of you how long did you really wait before you went back on a part time basis?  I ask for i am self employed and dont get any paid time off for this so was just trying to plan a bit.... as i know it is diff for each person.

Next is have you heard much on how insurance covers like skin removal and so on?  is it kinda like a 50/50 thing where some do some dont or depends on documentation...  i have talked to my surgeon bout it and that is kinda what he said.. guess im just thinking ahead and so on...for i know i wil have this..

How bout this......I am young mother of just one child.. she is a beautiful 3 yr old.. I would love to or i should say i want to have another for sure if not 2 in the future just right now with this overweight body i cant take another pregnancy.... so my surgeon tells me no prob that is very common for someone who has bypass surgery to have normal pregnancys and carry baby fine and so on....
is this true.. have any of you had a baby since your surgery or know anyone?

Im also getting my gall bladder out same day.. wonder if this will be a prob?

Ok i have thrown alot at all of you........im so excited to be part of this group for i now feel like i can finally have others who can relate with me... for i have to be honest i dont have anyone one that can help me.. as i feel very alone in this.  Most of my fam members havent even ever fought weight issues and my husband has never either and  just doensnt really understand either...

So thank you for letting me be part of this... and im looking forward to meeting all and everyone who wants to hold my hand or walk beside me in this new journey im so excited to take.

Lastly........lol crazy question but how do i get my pic to be on my profile when u see my name i have tried at least a dozen uploaded photos and each time it says to large or somthing like that so any suggestions.. ive tried all sizes.. now i had no prob uploading to my lil photo album on here.. so hmmm  i tried resizing em and all... so any advice?

Happy holidays to all... looking forward to the new year... xoxox to all... and to all a good night.. Stacie

Hi Stacy.  Wish I could answer your questions, but I will be having VSG in Kansas City, hopefully by the end of Feb.  Just wanted to say hi from another Iowan.  This weather is awful!

Some people might not support my WLS decision.
Those people remind me of slinkys. Not good for much but it would would bring a smile to my face if someone pushed them down the stairs.

Hi Stacie, let's take this a little at a time.  First the avatar photo.  Go to any internet site to re-size your selected photo.  Search free avatar resizing online.  Use the site to re-size your pic to 100 by 100 pixels, save the photo on your favorite photo site and use the re-sized pic to download for your avatar.  Sounds like you found the right spot here on OH to add the avatar, since you got the too large message.

I am here on the bariatric buddy group page a couple of times a day most days.  Glad to be your friend and help with any issues that I can.  My RNY was 16 weeks ago, I am loving the changes I see in my body, activity tolerance.

Gallbladder combined with wls is common, should be no issue.  I had mine out several years ago, due to issues with it at the time.  Nice to combine procedures when possible.  Insurance has requirements that must be met for them to pay for having the gallbladder removed.  Same with skin removal. You will need documented skin issues in skin folds, along what other requirements insurance has for payment for skin removal.  Contact your pcp or surgeon to have every rash, skin issue documented, even consider having photos of skin issues taken by PCP.
There are many who have had surgery and successful had another child.  There is a pregnancy forum here on OH where you will find great answers on that topic.

Exercise and returning to work is individual.  Those who have desk type jobs may be able to return to work earlier than those that have to lift while at work.  I planned to take 4 weeks off, work required that I take the 6 weeks so that I would have no lifting limits.  Yes, I do lifting on a daily basis.  Walking is a great exercise that should be started in small amounts very soon after surgery.  Weight lifting exercises have the same restrictions as work lifting.  Ask you surgeon about exercise limits.  Premature lifting may cause a hernia along your incision, you do not want to be dealing with another possible surgery, follow your MD instructions.  I was soooooo very tired the first couple of weeks after surgery.  I would wake up, get in fluids, supplements and a short walk and need a nap, wake up and repeat the process.  What kind of work do you do?

Vitamins and supplements, each surgeon has a different preference.  Some people take biotin to limit hair loss, ask you surgeon.  There will be some hair loss, may be related to the surgery, anesthesia, lack of protein and fluids in your diet.  The hair loss is short termed, usually from 3-6 months after surgery and will regrow.  Which surgical procedure are you planning to have.  Those that have lap band can get by with calcium carbonate, RNY need calcium citrate due to the malabsorption.  Unsure of the requirements for the other surgeries.

Dumping is a syndrome that happens when you consume high sugar, high fat foods after having malabsorption surgery like RNY.  Your body tried to balance the fluids, you feel light headed, dizzy, abdominal cramps, blood pressure may fall, nausea and several other symptoms.
the best treatment is to avoid the dump in the first place by proper dietary choices.  If you are mid dump, rest, sleep and it will get better with time.  I have not dumped since surgery, I choose to limit my intake to high protein, low carb, low fat foods.  I do not want to know what it feels like to dump.  I hope that I am a dumper and am using the knowledge that it may happen to help guide my food choices.  The high sugar/fat foods do not have the same appeal that they did before surgery.

Welcome to OH, I live in MN, north of Duluth.  Always looking to find more friends to lose weight with.  I hope the answers help.  Keep coming back with more questions.  Others will have additional ideas.  Use your surgeon's office for great information as well.  Read lots of posts, check out several forums here on OH.  Go ahead and shoot the questions out there.  Always get all the information you need for getting your questions answered.  I recall the feeling jumble of anticipation, excitement, nervousness all mixed together.  What a rush, enjoy the ride.

Have a very Merry Christmas.  Hugs, Kathy

Hi Stacie! So glad to see that you took me up on my offer to join our group here! I am not going to give a lot of feedback on some of your questions, as i have already done so, so you know my "opinion or suggestions" on many of these already.  (If I have the wrong stacie here, I apologize, and let me know..please!

As far as having children after wls, it happens all the time. As a matter of fact my daughter had RNY Jan 2008. She is now 11 weeks pregnant (almost 3 months), and both her and the baby are doing well. I have heard many times that babies born to a RNY mommy are actually healthier than those born to obese mommies.

Typically insurance only covers skin removal if you have several "documented" episodes of rawness, rash and infection due to the skin folds. So..if you get any of this go to a doctor, get treated and then it will be documented. This still won't guarantee they will cover it, but helps for sure.

If you have galbladder troubles, that will not stop you from having rny. They will just take the galbladder out during the rny surgery.. not a biggy there at all.

Dumping occurs when you take in too much sugars and fat. It happens because a portion of your intestine which absorbed these has been removed. Dumping can occur at various degrees, anything from a hot flash (severe) to vomitting and diarrhea Dizziness, lightheadedness,  severe nausea, abdominal cramping etc. It is NOT pleasant in the least. It is downright miserable! Avoid sugars and fats to prevent this from occuring.

The photo, it is possible you are not resizing them small enough. I think they need to be like 100 x 100 pixels.

Have a great holiday season and thanks for joining us!

Hi Stacie, glad to have you added to the group. I'm like you , still waiting for my surgery  on 2/5 and excited & nervous too. When I first went to the WLS seminar my surgical group puts on, they gave us a big notebook full of all kinds of info with answers to all many of your questions and info on the different surgeries they offer. Were you given any thing like that? I've also done a lot of research on line. This is my favorite site, but there are many other good sites also with lots of info. And OH has so many different groups, you can find someone with answers to almost any question.

I totally identify with your trouble getting your picture on your avatar. I have the same problem. Patrece tried to help me but it still didn't work. My pictures went in the photo album with no problem but not the avatar. I'll try Kathy's suggestion and see if that'll do the trick. Maybe we can both have our faces showing instead of that silhouette I don't like.

I'll be happy to walk with you on our journey. Lots of great people hang out here and they are very good at  "holding hands" and walking with you. Congratulations on getting your date, it'll be here so fast!

Hugs,
Rhonda
