I am just over 11 weeks out from surgery and going for my 3 month follow up appt next week.  Got a sneek peek at my labs.  The clinic has a "my health"  area on the clinic web site.  I have access to my labs, immunizations, etc.

My HGB A1C dropped from 7.1 to 6.7.  The rest of the labs are all in the normal ranges.

Lovely sunny Friday out there.  Have a great day everyone.  Hugs, Kathy

Great news, Kathy!!!  Keep on keeping on!!!

I would be interested in knowing how you have been doing with glucose levels since surgery.  Mine has been way down and now way up.  I was sent home from the hospital with instructions not to take any oral diabetic meds but was put on a sliding scale for insulin (the first time in my life I have taken insulin).  A few days after I got home, I had 3 or 4 days in a row of not having to take any insulin....now I am having to take insulin every time I take my glucose level.  And yesterday, my first day on anything but clear liquids, the glucose level shot way up.  It was still high this morning.

I am frustrated....when it was down my expectation was that I was close to not needing medication of any kind (I know, unrealistic perhaps).  Now that it is back up, I am considering asking my PCP whether I should be on my oral meds again so I don't have to keep going with the insulin injections.

I know everyone is different, but I was wondering what you thought based on your own experience!  Thanks!

Hi Guayas,

I was good at testing my blood glucose immediately after surgery, amazed that the meds were reduced as quickly as they were.  My blood sugars are getting closer to normal, as my A1C level shows.  My fasting and before meal sugars are between 100 and 139.  The ones I test 2 hours after eating are between 112 and 169.  I have not had any low readings,     I am glad, the sweats and shaking from having a low blood sugar are not fun.   I now test once to twice a day at varying times, my fingers are also grateful.

Everyone reacts differently to medications.  I agree, check with your PCP about your meds.  I am so glad that I am not needing the insulin at this point.  So is my abdomen (I gave all my shots there).  Do what you can to up the exercise, helps with the metabolism of the glucose.  If your body is not getting what it needs from the food you take in, you liver might be pumping out more stored glucose.  Checking with your PCP sounds like the best advice.

Thanks for the encouragement.  Hugs, Kathy

Guayas, I have a question for you... Are you type I or type II diabetes? If by chance you are type I, you may not get as much improvement as you'd hope for, but following the rules for what you should and should not eat should help keep it in better check. If you are type II you have a much higher chance of eventually seeing your diabetes go into remission. It may take a little longer. But the lower your BMI and the more active you are, the more your numbers should improve.
Hang in there gal.. enjoy this journey and all the benefits you are reaping from it.
Hugs!
