Protein Suggestions
I am 4 weeks out from RNY. I have been on clears for 2 weeks then full liquids and soft foods for the next two. Today I was supposed to start meats. Our progression does not do pureed. I began with tuna and some light mayo.
By no means am I cook, so I am looking for some suggestions for good meat proteins to start off with.
I have heard that chicken, turkey, steak and hamburg are rough in the beginning.
I am not a big fish person but am willing to try.
Thanks for any suggestions u can give me
I wish I had more for you,,,good luck!
I also had a really rough time in the beginning with finding protein I could eat that wouldn't make me sick.
We all react differently to different things. I had also heard that chicken, turkey and hamburger would be rough in the begininning but didn't have any problems for the most part. A lot of people do have some issues with these things early on, but that doesn't mean you will too. The only way to find out is to try it.
One my favorites has become pot roast. Tasty and easy on the pouch. Other things you can try are eggs, beans and lentils.
Good luck!

I had no trouble with the chicken and turkey early on. Ground beef was ok after 2 months. Regular beef like a roast or steak I cannot do still, unless I pressure cook it to the point of falling apart, then I do great with it.
If you are concerned with tolorating the chicken and turkey, start out with LEAN deli thin scliced turkey and cheicken breast meat. It is much easier to chew and digest. Ground turkey is also a good option to try. use it as you would ground beef. Just make sure you get the leanest possible in all meats you get.
Whatever you eat, but especially the "dense" proteins such as meats, Please be sure to chew chew chew. the more you chew each bite, the better it will be handled by your pouch. We really should do this with all foods. Remember to set your utensil down between bites and make your meal last at least 20 minutes. It is very hard I know...BUT we really need to do this for our own success and best interest.
Then there are these foods:
Cottage cheese, yogurt, hard boiled or scrambled egg, fat free refried beans, fat free or low fat cheeses, of course tuna and seafood, (which I am with you guys, not big on seafood. but actually get a hankering for fish from time to time now). Mushrooms actually have a decent protein content as well believe it or not, not super high, but certainly help out. Then other things you can do is to add an unflavored protein to a dish you are making. This will also help ensure you get more in.
I'm sure you may get more ideas as the day progresses.... hope this helps.
Refried beans, with a tad of salsa mixed in and topped with some low fat shredded cheese is not only high in protein, but delicious!
