Great American Smokeout

The Great American Smokeout is an annual event in the United States to encourage Americans (of whom 45.8 million smoke) to quit tobacco smoking. The American Cancer Society held its first Smokeout in 1977. The event challenges people not to smoke cigarettes for 24 hours, hoping their decision to quit will last forever. It is held annually on the third Thursday in November.

How many of you are willing to do this for the day (if you are still smoking that is)?  I have friends out there, and you know who you are, that still smoke, or restarted smoking.  Well my smoking friends, are you up to the challenge?

Let's hear about your efforts to stop smoking for a couple of hours, the whole day, permanently.  I have faith that you can take the time to get the help you need for the challenge.  Taking a stand, because I care about your health.  Encourage your smoking family members to join you in this important challenge.

Hugs, Kathy

Thanks for sharing this great information Kathy. Let me just add that for those of you who do not participate in this today, that do smoke... Quitting could be a great new years resolution for sure!

Thanks for posting this, Kathy.

I also urge any smoker to just give it a try.  I was required to quit smoking before my RNY by the surgeon.  He required that his patients be smoke-free for at a least 4 weeks prior to surgery.

I didn't want to quit, but I wanted the surgery even more.  I have now been smoke free for almost 4 months.  I won't pretend that it's been easy but it has been worth it.  I can breath again.  I'm saving a tremendous amount of money.  My clothes and hair smell better.

I have been doing good lately, just lighting one and letting it burn out, then relighting it later, maybe a puff or two on one ciggy. I am slowly but surely smoking less each day. I am hoping to be quit by new years.
