Lap Band Port

I'm still Pre-Op but my husband is concerned about the port that the Lap Band requires to have implanted in my abdomen.  He's worried that he will be able to feel and/or see it and that he will be rendered unconcious by this (he doesn't do well with blood and body-type stuff).  Does anyone have any answers I can give him?

Ok first off, he will not be able to see the port at all. It is placed under the skin. Now, if he is rubbing your belly, there is a possibility he may "feel " it under the surface, but if it is just a gentle rub, likely not...  And also, he can opt to touch the other side of your tummy to avoid it. It probably isn't good to have too mych touching going on right at the site, as you do not want the port to flip or slip on ya! But tell him, it is going to be just fine! How cute that he is worried about that. Men think of the darndest things huh?
You may message Sukie too, she has a band, and she could tell you if it is "feelable"  under the surface easily or not.
Good luck and reassure him, it is not going to be a big deal. It is not very large and not directly on the suirface.
Hugs!

Hi Karen, When I was thinking of surgery, I mentioned the lap band to my hubby, in his mind I was going to have something hanging out like a pigtail from my side.  Took pictures to explain what I was talking about.  I ended up deciding for RNY, and even more explaining what that meant.  Sometimes takes a while to let the info settle as men digest the information.  I have felt others ports, they are only palpable when you are looking for them.  He should have no trouble with yours.   Hugs, Kathy

Hi, I am six months post op lapband Karen and you and your husband have nothing to worry about.   My port is less noticeable even to touch as the days go by.   Like the girls said, it is not visible.  It is under the skin, no blood etc.   I think mine maybe was more noticeable to me early out as I kept feeling of my right abdomen.   Your abdomen will be swollen for a while but will go away.   I wish you lots of luck with your wls journey.   As for me I am very happy with my lapband as it has been very successful so far.   If you have any other questions that I may be able to help you with please don't hesitate to ask.

Thank you all so much for your answers and reassurances!  I'll tell him he has nothing to worry about.  Poor baby, I think he has a vision of a little pigtail hanging out of my side like your husband did Kathy!  I just got a really good animation of putting the Lap Band in from Franciscan Hospital too, so I can show him that...for as long as he can remain concious during the film.  Lol.  Hugs to all!!
Most Sincerely,
Karen
