6 Days Post-Op

Hi Everyone,
Sorry I  haven't been around much, but my body just wanted to sleep.  Is that normal?Anyway, I am
6 days post-op. I am sore, especially on my left side. Biggest challenge to date is getting in my protein and hydration.
But there is excellent news. I am a type 2 diabetic, and I have high blood pressure.  The hospital had already taken me
off of my Avandamet, which is an oral diabetic med, and had also took me off of my nighttime insulin, Lantus Solostar.
They instructed me to drop my daytime insulin to 1/2 of my regular dose. When I took my fasting blood sugar yesterday
morning, it was only 139, which is usually what it is when I am on all my meds! Then I decided to weigh myself. I know, I said I wouldn't do that for a while. Well, the night before surgery, I weighed 241 lbs, as of yesterday morning, I weighed in at 231.6 lbs!  UNBELIEVABLE!  It has been a real motivator.

Allow me to back track just a bit to the hospital experience. Keep in mind that I can be a big baby when it comes to pain, so I asked friends and co-workers who have had the surgery, to be honest with me. The worst part of the hospital experience, was getting my JP drain taken out.  IT HURT! I'm not trying to scare anyone here, and please know it's different for everyone. I told the resident that took out my drain, that this caused more pain than having a 9lb baby, and I wasn't lying.  Was it worth it?  ABSOLUTELY! To all, who have upcoming surgeries, God Speed and best wishes!
Hugs,
Rita

Rita,
After I had my surgery I slept a lot!  My poor friend thought there was something wrong with me.  But, my body just needed the extra sleep.
Congratulations on not having to take any more meds for the diabetes and HTN.  One less pill is always good!
I did not have to experience the drain.  Sorry about the pain issues with the removal.  But, to look at it this way, the worst is over and the best yet to come...being on the loser's bench!

Hi, Rita.  Congrats on getting through the surgery.  I am 4 days away from my RNY and no, you didn't scare me off!  Since both my daughters are adopted, I have no idea how having a 9# baby feels, but my youngest daughter has had 3 kids by C-section the largest 8# 9 oz!

Congrats on getting off the diabetic and other med.  That's an incredible thing this soon after surgery.

I have a pretty high pain tolerance but thats' easy to say on this side of the operating table!

I too am sorry for all  your pain, but your initial weight loss has been great, and you're going to just keep on doing well.

God Bless you, Katie

Thanks so much, Rita.  That means so much.  I'm not nervous yet, and my check in time is at 5:30 a.m. (wouldn't you know it!).  I'm sure I'll be nervous during the night and certainly at check in. But, I do so appreciate the prayers; they mean more than anything.   Have a wonderful evening, and I know I'll get through it fine!  Katie

Hey Rita! I too slept alot after surgery for the whole time in the hospital and my first 3 days home. Body needs the rest to heal.
So sorry your drain was so painful coming out. It shouldn't have hurt like that. Makes me wonder if they had the balloon deflated all the way or if they forgot to snip a stitch holing it in place. My daughter said her drain hurt coming out too. Mine did not hurt a bit. Just felt funky, like a snake slithering out of me... LOL.
Congrats on the awesome weightloss and health improvements! Hang on, its only just begun!
Hugs!

Hi Rita, sorry to be late in replying.  I was MIA on a trip for a while.  So glad that you are home and doing well.  My first week was spent with major time napping.  Took my pain med, sipped, got in a little protein, walked a little in the house and I was so tired, I had to nap for 2 hours and then do it all over again.  You are right on track.

Seeing the numbers go down is a real motivator.  Sorry the JP hurt coming out, I have nothing for reference.  I did have an OnQ pain pump that I took out myself on day 5 after surgery, felt like a wiggly worm snaking its way out.

Good that you are on less medications.  I took my last insulin shot the day before surgery and am on just 1 diabetic pill twice a day.  Hopefully off this too with more loss.  The rest of my meds are less too, it is great.

Take care of your self.  Hugs, Kathy
