Second Iron Transfusion

Sorry I was MIA this week --I left for Iowa to pick up Hubby on Tuesday - spent the night at my Daughter Ashley's house on the way Tuesday night - picked hubby up and got back to my daughters house Wednesday 1am, watched my granddaughter so they did not have to pay daycare on Thursday and I of course got a granddaughter FIX!! Left Iowa at 6pm last night -pulled an all nighter driving from Iowa back to Ohio arrived at 5am got to bed at 630am slept till 10 and then was off for blood work and transfusion.....

All went well with the second transfusion -- First transfusion did not up my iron level or hemoglobin level, it did up my blood platelet count so it is at least helping something. They said it may take up to 5-6 wks for it to show improvement with my iron level! I have transfusions scheduled every Friday this Month with blood work to be drawn from my port an hour before hand-even with the port installed - it is NOT easy to get blood from me - They had a hell of a time today!! Had to lay a certain way because the port line was kinking!! Nothing could be easy about this whole thing for me!!

I am off for a hot bath and an early bed, I am exhausted!!

Hugs

Vick, I have had small Iron issues since my WLS in 2007. But it was always corrected by upping iron to 4 times the amount another WLS patient would take. Then in February of 2008, I got really sick with a kidney infection/stone that went undiagnosed for 3 weeks, I almost died the infection was so bad. At that time I had to have a blood transfusion to up my hemoglobin and iron - all was well again until April of this year when I noticed I just felt like crap - contacted WL surgeon did all the grand blood work and again iron was low - he said it was time to send me to an Oncologist - My WL doc not only talked to the oncologist about my problems, they sent a letter with me as to what needed to be done. The oncologist IGNORED everything the WL doc had to say, and insisted before he would do a blood transfusion or iron transfusion I have a colonoscapy - which WLS people should not really have unless it is a last resort due to all the fluids you have to drink at one time and the cleansing of the bowels it does - pretty harsh **** - So i refused the colonoscapy - he refused to treat me - this went on for a couple months - in the mean time I had upped my iron myself again in hopes that it would help....fast forward to the end of June - I went to my family Doc, I was having horrible dizzy spells, always feeling light headed nauseated and extremely fatigued. He did more blood work and the iron, hemoglobin and platelet counts were horrible- so he sent me to another oncologist - after telling him about the 1st oncologist he said he promised this guy would DO what was needed and not bull**** around - so went - he wanted to do a colonoscapy as well - i refused - he said fine - he made me take 2 iron pills wait 90 min go get blood work - the purpose of this was to see if I would have an Iron increase from those pills - if I did then a colonoscapy was in order - if no increase then he knew it was an iron absorption problem!! So had the first oncologist done this absorption test I would have NEVER gotten as bad as I am and maybe just a blood transfusion may have been all I needed at that time to help get everything back to normal!! But now I am facing the whole iron transfusions for at least the rest of the month - then they will do the massive blood workup (13 vials instead of the 2 vials weekly) on October 7th and see how every thing has improved and go from there whether I need transfusion for another 5 weeks.

Since you said you skirt in and out of anemia make sure  you stay on top of all your blood work - get it every 3 months - 6 months at the most!! If you do that you will catch anything out of the ordinary before it can become a problem!! My family doc will do my blood work every 3 months to insure this never happens again - and I am sure my oncologist will also make sure blood work for at least iron is done often as well.

Sorry for writing a book....
