Insomnia

Anyone else having trouble sleeping at night?  The last 3 nights, somewhere between 2 and 3 am, it is like some one turned off my sleep.  I am wide awake and have to get up.  This lasts for 2-3 hours and then I am able to go back to bed for more rest.  At first I blamed it on my daytime napping.  Well yesterday, only 1 short nap on the sofa lounger in the afternoon.  Not my three 2 hour naps I had the first few days.  I moved my walking and gym time to earlier in the day, did restful things in the evening.  What gives?  The MD office says this is normal and should resolve in a few weeks.  Now I am used to working the night shift, but not sleeping my usual night shift sleep times.  It is not pain that wakes me, not even bathroom needs, I can take my med or use the bathroom and go back to bed when needed.  Last night awake from 3-6am.  Slept 11-3 and 6-10.

Any suggestions?  Considering taking some benadryl tonight.

Hugs, Kathy

i wake up a lot too, but i think for me it is due to pain or position issues, I like to sleep on my stomach or side and I can't right now, and I am sleeping in a recliner because it is easier to get in and out of, so I think that is part of my problem I am not in my room with the fan for background noise or in my bed.  I still nap during the day (the lortab makes me sleepy) but I am noticing that this is happening less for me as well.  We are still so early out, I say sleep when the mood hits because we need the rest to heal, time enough later to get back to a normal sleep pattern (or for us night shift nurses a semi-normal sleep pattern lol)

not being able to sleep is a pain in the keister. i have lived with insomnia for about 21 years.  good idea to limit the naps.  benadryl works for a while for me at least.  my dad takes tylenol pm and it works for him.  good luck to u on your sleep. vick

Good to know I am not alone.  I too, usually sleep on my abdomen, of course, can't right now.  Using pillows for positioning.  Guess it's part of the process.  Can't last forever.  Thanks Shannon.

It will get better. Increased energy is a natural side effect for a little while after surgery, when we are still too early out to make good use of it.  We are less active than normal too during this time, and the less active, the less continuous sleep we need. Thats why the naps are a good thing. It won't be long, and your sleep will likely improve for you. Lots of internal changes going on right now too! I just went with the flow my body preferred early out. By the time I was home 3 days I didn't even need naps anymore. Some do for weeks. NOW I need my naps more than then. Go figure!
