I ran across this article that addresses studies done longer term on diabetics that have undergone weight loss surgery. The title is: Data confirm long-term effects of bariatric surgery on type 2 diabetes. AND it is GREAT NEWS!

Thanks for the article.  Planning to be able to reduce my insulinn needs if I am not able to get off the insulin completely.  I have been on insuling for several years now, time will tell how much reserve my pancreas has.

Took my last dose of insulin the day before surgery, still needing pills to control diabetes, but much better than shots.  So 10 months so far and no insulin, yeehaaaaaaw.

Great to read! I am scheduled for RNY on9/9 and my main purpose is to get off the many diabetes medications I am on...not to say looking good won't be a bonus! But thanks for the info, it just helps me know that this is the right decision. I am just a little bit nervous about the "afters" from such a drastic surgery, but I know it will be OK...right?

You will do great as long as you follow all of the guidelines.
I just want to tell you this tho...being diabetic, it is imperative that you get all of your protein in so you can heal as quickly as possible. I don't know how bad your diabetes is, but I'm sure you know it causes a slower healing time. If it is fairly well controlled and you get in all of your protein, you are gonna heal great most likely. Also keep a good eye on your blood sugar levels, so your diabetic meds can be lowered as needed. We don't want ya crashing!
One of our members here has had to decrease her insulin during her pre-op liquid diet. so just be really watchful of the blood sugars!
Cobgrats on your very soon to be surgery! It is an awesome journey.

Great article. After only 2 weeks my blood sugar level has shrunk to where I am no longer on insulin. I still have to monitor my blood sugar as I am so new, but my doctor feels positive that this is the answer to my diabetes. I hope many others here have that same result.
